How to Grow Hair Longer

Hair trends come and go, but how to grow hair longer is always helpful to know. Salon remorse is too common. You know, that sinking feeling you get when you tell the hairdresser to cut just a couple of inches off and she goes and chops off too much. It’s always good to know that, even though you can’t have your hair back, you can at least help it grow faster to recover its length within a shorter period of time. Hair grows approximately a quarter or half an inch per month, barring any illness or genetic predispositions. You can try to improve this rate by following the tips below.

  1. Don’t trim your hair. Now this may seem obvious—don’t cut your hair, it will get longer—but it’s funny how so many people believe otherwise. It’s a popularly held belief that trimming hair makes it grow faster. This is not so. Trimming hair is helpful for cutting off dry ends and controlling split ends so that they do not go up the hair shaft and further damage hair. But provided you take good care of your hair, you shouldn’t need trims too frequently.

trim, you are simply cutting off the equivalent of the growth your hair just gained. So how do you take care of hair so that it won’t need trimming often? Gentle brushing and toweling, minimized use of heating equipment, less chemical applications (dyes, perms, etc.), not using abrasive hair accessories such as metal barrettes and rubber bands, and use of shower cap in pools. Weekly hot oil treatments and semi-monthly deep conditioning also help.

  2. Massage your scalp. Give yourself regular scalp massages to stimulate blood flow, which is necessary for hair growth. A simple massage around your scalp with the pads of your fingers for three to five minutes before shampooing. You may not notice the difference, but trust that your hair will be all the better for it.

  3. Get keratin treatments. One common cause of breakage and falling hair is damage from heating equipment such as flat irons, dryers, curling irons, hot rollers, etc. Many women can’t let go of these tools to style their hair, but if they only damage the hair, then it just defeats the purpose. Keratin treatments cover the hair with a protective layer. At the same time, it smooths down the cuticles, improving the overall texture of the hair, so that there’s less of a need to use hot tools. There are keratin treatment kits available for use in the home; once every two months should suffice.

  4. Take supplements. Some people swear by this, but it’s always best to consult a healthcare professional to inquire about possible health risks, especially because every individual is unique and may respond differently. Multivitamins, fish oil, vitamin C, and iron may help speed up hair growth by improving the body’s overall health and stimulating cell regeneration. Some women have used birth control pills to hasten hair growth; there is no scientific basis for this, but then again, people’s bodies respond differently, and it just might suit you.

  5. Stay healthy. Depriving the body of nutrition and rest will show up in hair, making it look dull, dry, and lifeless. A diet rich in protein, omega-3 fats, fruits, and vegetables is necessary. Exercise regularly; this will not only give you a glow, but the health benefits will also help your hair grow. Make sure to get sufficient rest and enough hours of sleep. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Hydration is very important to healthy, quick-growing hair, and the hair’s source of moisture is the body, as it grows in the scalp. Frequent washing will not add moisture to the hair, but frequent shampooing could strip it of whatever moisture it has and leave it dry. You’re better off prolonging the duration between washes and not fussing with your hair too much.

All these will help you in your quest in how to grow hair longer, and you should be enjoying long, luxuriant tresses sooner than you thought possible.
