How to Hatch Chicken Eggs

Not all children can have the opportunity to witness how to hatch chicken eggs right from the farm or from their natural habitat. This is the reason why educational institutions take the liberty of demonstrating this to their students through related subjects like biology and science. Many believe that knowing the process and being able to watch the beginning of a chick’s life cycle is an intellectual breakthrough for young people. If you take this upon yourself for the benefit of your children, use the following tips:

  1. Visit a hatchery and choose fertilized eggs that are free from blemishes like dents and crevices. End your search by buying perfectly smooth eggs that are not too large or too small. Don’t be tempted to pick up the larger ones – they may be difficult to hatch in the incubator.

  2. Since you will not be letting a hen sit on the eggs to hatch, you have to get an incubator. Depending on your budget, you can buy the most preferred force-air incubator equipped with a fan, or you could opt for still-air just for demonstration purposes.

  3. Do not use the incubator without trying it out first. There must be no fluctuating temperatures and it must maintain the same humidity all throughout the 24 hour period. Start the procedure inside a well-ventilated facility inside the house.

  4. Once you’re certain about the consistent output of the incubator, arrange the eggs on it and do not make any adjustments for the first two days. You will notice a drop in the temperature after placing the eggs, but this is just normal. The eggs normally remain in the incubator for at least 21 days before they hatch. However, expect the others to hatch sooner than later.

  5. Temperature for forced-air incubation must be maintained at 100 degrees Fahrenheit, whereas 102 degrees for a still-air incubation. Humidity should be around 60 percent and increased to 65 when you start seeing cracks in the eggs. Do the adjustments on the third day of the incubation process.

  6. Distribute the heat from the incubator evenly to both sides of the eggs by turning them at least six times daily – except when they’re approaching the 19th day in the incubator. This is when they start to show signs of hatching. Avoid pointing the slimmer portion of the eggs up into the air. When one portion of the egg starts to crack, revealing the chick inside, the chick will be totally out from the shell in about 24 hours.

  7. Let the chicks clear their own way out so that they can develop a sense of being independent. Once they are all out, you can tidy up the incubator by disposing of the shells and cleaning the surface with a damped rag. Disinfect the incubator before preparing the next load of eggs. Do not pour water on it to avoid short circuits.

How to hatch chicken eggs requires some careful calculations.  Things can go wrong when there’s a rise and fall of humidity and temperature. Never expose the eggs to extreme heat or cold prior to the incubation process. It can cause healthy eggs to become infertile. Obtain a good thermometer to monitor the temperature while incubating the eggs. This will verify the built-in temperature gauge in the incubator. This will not be necessary for expert farmers, but if you are just experimenting, better be ready for some twists and turns.
