How to Help a Dog with Anxiety

Like humans, animals also experience anxiety, fear and stress. Of course, the causes and levels of stress and anxiety that we deal with are far different from what a dog and other animals go through. When a dog is separated from his human companion, the tendency of having an anxiety attack is increased. Natural phenomenon, such as a storm, can also cause stress on your poor pup. Determine ways on how to help a dog with anxiety and follow these simple, yet helpful tips.

  1. Constant and frequent veterinary visits. Your vet can help rule out the cause of the stress. He might not appreciate these visits during the first few times; however, if the cause of the stress and anxiety is a medical problem, your vet will be able to help mend it.

  2. Lessen the hours within the day that you spend away from your dog. It is not advisable to leave your dog for more than eight hours a day. Four to six hours away from you is enough time for your pet to develop anxiety. When you get home, do not startle him right away with your presence; instead put away your coat and purse first and tend to other things.

    Give it sometime before you show yourself to your dog.

  3. Leave treats and toys with him while you are gone. Before you step out of the house, make sure that your dog is left with something he can be busy with, like his favorite toy or some treats. Leaving the television or radio on while you are away will also help ease the anxiety of your dog. Leave the house as discretely as possible so he will not notice you.

  4. Let the dog become familiar with the new place and its surroundings before moving into a new home. Bring him to the place a few times and let him hang around for a while or play with him there until he gets comfortable with it. Any change in the environment or routine that your dog has been accustomed to will bring him a level of anxiety and stress.

  5. Exercise with your dog. Walking your dog for quite some time before leaving will help drain his mental and physical strength so he becomes too tired to notice that you are already leaving. A healthy pet will be less prone to have anxiety attacks. Doing exercises together will strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

  6. Counter how the dog reacts to natural phenomenon. Stress, anxiety and fear in dogs can be caused by natural occurrences like loud thunder, lightning and heavy rains. Although these events are beyond your control, you can still help control the reaction of your pet by placing him away from windows and doors where he can hear the noise from outside.

A dog that is free from stress and anxiety will live a healthier and happier life. Spend as much time as you can with your pet and know other ways on how to help a dog with anxiety.
