How to House Train a Chihuahua

How to House Train a Chihuahua

A Chihuahua has large dog qualities in a petite package. He can be a watchdog that protects your property yet at the same time be gorgeous and charming. Chihuahua owners spend a lot of time caring for and pampering their beloved dogs. The most difficult task when caring for a Chihuahua puppy is housetraining.  Learning how to house train a Chihuahua puppy is easy. However, you might have a hard time implementing these tips with your puppy. Patience and perseverance are a must when house training your pet. A Chihuahua can be stubborn and may want to have his way instead of following your instructions. With a few helpful and effective tips, house training can still be successful. Here are some tips to help you do this:

  1. Start at an early age. Housebreaking your Chihuahua puppy should be done before he develops poor potty habits and eliminates anywhere he feels inside your home. As soon as he is ready, lead him to the appropriate place to pee or poop. Training him at an older age will make it more difficult for both you and your Chihuahua.

  2. Consistency and perseverance are the keys to successful potty training.

Remember that your Chihuahua puppy does not have the same bladder size as that of larger-sized dogs. It is for this reason that he goes to ‘do his thing’ more frequently compared to other dogs. It is your duty to consistently accompany him when he needs to do this so he will know his potty place. After being patient with him, your puppy will understand what you are teaching him and will do this even without your command.

  3. One word instruction. Using too many words during training will confuse your dog which is not effective. Instruct your puppy with only one word such as ‘out’ when it is time for him to eliminate. A Chihuahua puppy is very intelligent and when it gets used to hearing this word from you, he will soon associate going out with ‘doing his thing’.

  4. Set a potty schedule. A Chihuahua puppy will most likely need to take a break and answer the call of nature at least every two hours. He may also need to do this after every meal, water break, stroll in the park or playtime. Before goes to sleep at night and when he wakes up in the morning are also good potty training times. Keeping this in mind will help you set up his potty schedule. See to it that you are present when he needs to do this especially during the first few months of training.

  5. Invest your time with him. House training a Chihuahua will require much of your attention since this may be a long training task. The time you spend training him will bring good results. You will notice how he matures into a great companion in due time.

  6. Reinforce positivity. Spanking, shouting, hitting will never go well with training any dog breed. Never be harsh or do anything physical to your dog. Instead of shouting at him, praise his good deeds with words of appreciation and recognition. Give him treats as well.
