The increase or decrease of your school attendance is one good way to determine the efficiency of your school. A competitive learning process is not all about classroom instructions or laboratory experiments but, rather, a combination of the teachers’ skills and talents, the support of the State, and the cooperation of the students. The aspect on how to improve attendance in schools is just one of the many challenges that must be addressed by all the parties involved. The State, school, teachers, students, and the parents are all stakeholders in improving school attendance. All must work together to achieve fairly good school attendance. The responsibility does not lie with  one, two or three parties alone. The following steps can surely help in improving school attendance:

  1. The State must appropriate the budget for education to entice people to study. One aspect of dissatisfaction on the part of students that forces them to drop out from school is their lack of interest to go to school. The State must encourage the populace that school is very important and that it is investing in the needs of the educational institutions to improve the quality and standards of education.


    Schools and learning facilities must be enhanced, developed, and properly maintained. The State must spend on research programs and research facilities to be headed by school authorities.

  2. There must be career counselors in school. The career counselors must devise a program that will help students to develop and further their interests to keep attending school. It must be emphasized to them that education is very important in achieving their desired career in the future. The students must be properly guided, in other words.

  3. Create a variety of curriculum. The school curriculum must be designed not just for the academics but for the technical workers as well. School authorities must recognize the fact that there are students who perform better on technical projects. It is best if the students are given wider choices to decide on their individual careers.

  4. Create a good learning environment. The students deserve a kind of school atmosphere very conducive to learning. The school premises must be a drug-free and crime-free zone. Racism must be eliminated and due respect must be given to each student regardless of color, ethnic origin, creed, or faith.

    On the academic side, the right teaching approach is to make learning fun and enjoyable. Never confine teaching just to the four corners of the classroom. Allow the students to go on field trips or nature adventures once in a while so they can have a better understanding of nature.

  5. Be clear on attendance rules. Emphasize to the students on the first day of school that attendance is a must. Encourage them to always be present in class. If there is an attendance reward system, tell them about it. Likewise, warn them of the bad effects of incurring absences like missing an important subject and other school activities.

    The school’s attendance reward system can contain privileges and citations to be given both to students and teachers who exhibit a perfect attendance record for the week, for the month, and for the entire school year.

    Teachers must have uniform rules on absences. The stringent rules must remain stringent and must apply to all students equally, although considerations may be given in exceptional cases.

  6. Be a role model. From the school administrators, down to the teaching personnel and non-teaching personnel, all must set good examples to students in terms of attendance. As much as possible, refrain from going on long vacation leaves during school days.

  7. Encourage the participation of the parents. All parents must be part of the equation in achieving a better attendance rate at school. The parents must act as the main guide of the students at home and at school. They can even perform practical teaching at home. After all, learning starts at home.

  8. Establish a good rapport with parents and students. When a good rapport is established, every teacher can personally echo his or her concern about a student’s absences to the concerned parents. To build a good rapport, show the students and the parents that they are most welcome and that their concerns are duly recognized and given close attention.
