How to Increase Hormones to Get Pregnant

  1. Maintain optimal estrogen levels. Estrogen is the main female sex hormone responsible for secondary sex characteristics, sex drive, and uterine development. It is also involved in metabolism and important to fertility. Very low levels can lead to irregular menstruation, decreased libido and inability to become pregnant, while very high levels can cause fertility issues and early onset of menstruation. A hormone that prepares the body for conception and pregnancy, progesterone is often called the “pregnancy hormone.” After ovulation, a women’s body produces progesterone, which causes the uterine lining to thicken to get it ready for a fertilized egg. Progesterone levels increase from ovulation until the beginning of the menstrual period; this is called the luteal phase. Women with very low progesterone levels often have a short luteal phase, and thus, their body does not allow fertilized eggs to implant properly into the uterus. The good news is that low progesterone levels are easy to treat. A variety of progesterone supplements, such as creams, vaginal tablets, and injections, are commercially available.

  3. Improve your diet. As with all things health-related, a balanced diet is the foundation to getting your body to function optimally. Aside from eating more fruits and vegetables, you need specific nutrients to maintain optimal hormone levels. Consume foods high in zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. Zinc aids in hormone production and immunity, and it is necessary for optimal utilization of estrogen and progesterone. Omega-3 fatty acids aid in better hormone transport, while fiber regulates and balances estrogen. Also, a nutrient-dense diet containing lots of fish, meat, cheese, whole grains, and eggs helps a lot.

  4. Consume good fats. Hormones are made up of cholesterol, and if your body lacks this nutrient, it may not properly produce the hormones you need to get pregnant. Some foods that contain good fats that aid in hormone production are whole milk, egg yolk, butter and cream, coconut oil, and olive oil. Avoid oils that may contain compounds not good for proper hormone functioning, like soybean, canola, cottonseed, and other hydrogenated oils.

  5. Take supplements. There are vitamins and minerals that can help with hormonal balance, but you would have to consume greater amounts than what you can get from your diet. Supplements that contain the following can help boost proper hormone levels: Vitamins C, D, B vitamins, folic acid, selenium, zinc, and chromium.

  6. Get help from herbs. Many herbs are available to boost fertility. An herb called vitex agnus-castus or chaste tree berry is a widely known herb of choice to restore hormonal balance in women, especially those with a short luteal phase. This herb helps regulate periods, control heavy bleeding, and balance high estrogen levels. You can turn to other herbs, such as red raspberry leaf, which is a uterine tonic; maca, which promotes fertility and vitality; and nettle leaf, which contains potent nutrients and prevents hemorrhage, to balance your hormones.

  7. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol. Coffee and alcohol are two of the most widely consumed substances suspected to affect hormone levels. Frequent consumption of both can alter normal hormone levels, thereby interfering with conception and decreasing chances of pregnancy.

  8. Keep your stress levels down. Hormonal imbalances are often linked to stress. Chronic stress places the body in a state of imbalance, which affects hormonal function. Take a break every once in a while and practice daily activities that relieve stress, like meditation and yoga, to help get your hormones in sync and prepare your body for conception.
