How to Lighten Hair Dyed Too Dark

How to Lighten Hair Dyed Too Dark

Dyeing your hair can be a risky process, especially if you are doing it for the first time. Once you have dyed your hair and realize that the color does not suit you, it is often too late to turn back. However, all is not lost, as you can choose to lighten your hair through various methods. Just do not expect the results to be instant, as most of them require some time to work. If you are really not happy with your too-dark hair, here are the ways on how to lighten hair dyed too dark:

  1. Shampoo your hair. A clarifying shampoo can help lighten your hair because it is full of color-stripping surfactants. To use a clarifying shampoo, wash your hair as soon as you can after dyeing. The faster you can get to your freshly dyed hair, the easier it is to fade the color. After washing your hair with water, apply a strong, clarifying shampoo on your hair and massage it thoroughly from roots to tips. If you do not have a clarifying shampoo, you may use an anti-dandruff shampoo that uses tar as one of its ingredients. Rinse your hair with hot water after shampooing, but make sure that the temperature does not burn you.

Re-apply the clarifying shampoo one more time before thoroughly drying your hair and continue washing your hair with clarifying shampoo several times per day. You will notice after a few days that your hair's color has significantly faded. Do not forget to apply conditioner after shampooing. For added conditioning, apply coconut oil to your hair at least once a week.

  2. Use a chemical dye remover. A chemical dye remover is effective in lightening up hair, though this should be the last resort as it is also notorious for being so strong that it can damage hair. Simply follow the instructions found on your chemical dye remover in order to use it. It is also helpful to test the dye first on a small and discreet lock of hair so that if it does not work out well, you do not end up damaging your whole head. Also remember that this only works for fading hair that has been dyed too dark and cannot be used to darken hair that has been dyed light. After using a chemical dye remover, make sure that you deeply condition your hair to avoid damage.

  3. Use baking soda. If you want a natural way to remove your hair's dark color, then baking soda is your weapon of choice. Mix ½ cup of baking soda with ½ cup of water to create a thick paste. Massage the mixture on your hair for 15 minutes, and then rinse it with hot water. Repeat this as needed until you achieve the color that you want. Remember to condition your hair thoroughly after using baking soda, since this substance can strip your hair of its natural oils.

  4. Make your own color stripper at home. To make your own color stripper, mix 1 tablespoon of bleach powder, 25 ml of peroxide, and a small amount of shampoo. Combine thoroughly and then apply it to your wet hair, just as you would use a normal shampoo. Make sure that you rub it on your hair for three to five minutes, taking care not to get it in your eyes. Rinse, towel dry, and then apply some conditioner or treatment afterwards. It is also important to remember that you should use the color stripper within 30 minutes from the time you made it.

Now that you know how to lighten hair dyed too dark, make sure that you do not forget to condition and treat your hair afterwards. Any chemical treatment can damage your hair, so be sure to wait at least a month before coloring or dyeing your hair again.
