How to Lose Stomach Fat

The stomach is one of the hardest areas to target for body sculpting, mostly because the muscles are right behind a protective layer of fat. You can do all the crunches and core exercises in the world, but unless you can first melt away that fat layer, all you will have to show for it is a bloated gut. However, even though burning off tummy lard is not easy, neither is it impossible. Fitness experts know a thing or two about losing belly fat. According to them, there are four keys to whittling love handles down: diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management. Here’s how to lose stomach fat:

  1. The most effective technique for fat burning is interval training: alternating short durations of high-intensive burnouts with moderate periods. Interval training can be incorporated in almost any kind of routine. For example, when on the treadmill, you can crank the speed up until you are running at a quick pace, then after a minute or two, slow down into a brisk walk. Repeat this until the end of your treadmill time. When doing squats, lifts, or crunches you can shift into short periods of double-time reps in between normal-time sets.

Aside from giving you a rush, interval training can keep your metabolism elevated for as long as 16 hours after your workout.

  2. Don’t forget the warm-up. Doing core exercises is the most direct way to tone down your midsection, but skipping the warm-up will prevent abdominal muscles from fully engaging. The hip and back muscles end up doing more work instead. Give yourself a long, slow stretch until your middle back feels loose and relaxed.

  3. Eat more olive oil. Olive oil is pure fat, but it’s the good kind of fat. Researchers even say that eating a tablespoon of olive oil before a meal stimulates the release of hormones that signal fullness to the brain, so you don’t end up eating too much. A very enjoyable way to get your olive oil fix is to dip a piece of multi-grain bread into an olive oil flavored with some crushed garlic. Yum.

  4. Cut back on the alcohol. Beer bellies got their name for a reason: drinking alcohol makes your gut stick out. Alcohol may not be sweet, but the body turns it into sugar nonetheless, and sugar is ultimately stored as fat. You may not realize it, but most alcoholic drinks can have as many calories as regular soda. And if you have a penchant for rich cocktails like piña coladas or Kahlua, then it’s like devouring piece after piece of inebriating cupcake.

  5. Now here’s some good news: eating dark chocolate can help you lose stomach fat. We are talking about pure dark chocolate here, not candy bars that have been loaded with so much milk and sugar that the cocoa content is ridiculously low. Dark chocolate is rich in zinc, which increases the body’s production of the hormone leptin. You want a lot of leptin circulating in your body because it is the chemical that tells the brain you are full and you don’t need to eat yet.

Aside from diet and exercise, a crucial part of learning how to lose stomach fat has a lot to do with proper stress management. Higher stress levels have been linked to increased cortisol production, and cortisol actually promotes the storage of fat in the tummy area. The same can be said for sleep deprivation, since not getting enough sleep negatively affects a person’s ability to cope with stressors. Keeping these tips in mind will go a long way towards getting you the flat stomach you’ve always wanted.
