How to Lower Iron Levels in the Blood

Iron is an indispensable mineral in the production of hemoglobin.   1. See a doctor. The doctor will confirm the symptoms and signs of iron overload and will prudently advise you to undergo tests such as an iron saturation test, hemochromatosis test, simple blood test, serum transferrin saturation, and serum ferritin.

  2. Limit the intake of iron-rich foods. Reduce your intake of iron-rich foods such as red meat and iron-fortified cereal and bread.   4. Limit intake of foods rich in vitamin C. If the usual sources of iron consist of plant products like green, leafy vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, taking vitamin C can help in their absorption by the body. Therefore, if you derive iron from these food sources, you need to limit your intake of vitamin C.

  5. Ingest foods and beverages that slow down iron absorption. Eggs, milk, cheese, butter, and other dairy products, beverages like tea and coffee have a negative effect in iron absorption. By including them in your daily diet while undergoing medication for elevated iron, they can definitely help in lowering your abnormal iron levels in your blood.

  6. Undergo phlebotomy treatment. In severe cases of high iron levels in the blood, phlebotomy treatment may be considered. The treatment has two phases: first is the reduction phase, and second is the long-term maintenance phase. Primarily, the treatment involves the removal of blood until the excess iron in it is totally eliminated.
