How to Lower Your Iron Levels

Iron is a good mineral that brings oxygen where it should be in the internal parts of the human body. Growing up, we were told to eat more foods rich in iron to avoid Anemia – a condition where red corpuscles are lesser than white corpuscles in the blood. Little did we know that there’s also a condition that is caused by iron overload. The ways on how to lower your iron levels will become invaluable when confronted by this circumstance. Hemochromatosis is a dangerous condition where iron is stored in high levels to the point that it becomes toxic. Since most of us are aware of how to increase iron levels, we just have to do the reverse to lower it. Most of the methods are purely lifestyle modifications. There are also supplements that can be administered to regulate the high levels of iron. Your doctor may advise you of the following:

  1. Take protein substitutes that are not rich in iron. Instead of the usual red meat, opt for black or white meats. Cease eating liver. Eliminate or lessen consumption of eggs, fresh or canned tuna and chicken.



  2. If you can’t help taking some heavy iron sources, add milk or pekoe and black tea into your meal to decrease or block iron absorption. There are more foods that bind to iron and some are even called iron blockers. Egg yolks and soy products are iron blockers. They contain elements that hinder iron absorption.

  3. Prioritize a high-fiber diet over animal produce. Eating no less than 35 grams daily is enough for an adult to lower iron levels. Non-heme iron from plants is not highly absorbable. Your body will be safe having enough iron to maintain the body’s vigor and, at the same time, unthreatened by the risk of iron overloading. There are many vegetables and fruits that are abundant with fiber. You just have to take your pick.

  4. Get a prescription from your doctor for supplements like calcium and antacids. They stop the rise of iron levels because they are iron-binding substances. Never do self-medication with these drugs because they must be balanced with your actual condition. Dosages and frequencies must be planned so as not to cause iron deficiency. Only doctors can make a proper estimation based on your physical status.

In many cases, the main cause of iron overload is hereditary haemochromatosis. It is a genetically inherited condition. If the natural methods to lower iron levels are not met, repeated blood transfusions may be necessary. Aside from being uncomfortable, this is a traumatic experience that can reoccur– lessening the quality of life. Learning how to lower your iron levels is very practical to do when iron overloading is not yet chronic. It is advisable to submit yourself to a regular schedule of phlebotomies or bloodletting if you suspect that you have inherited the disease.
