How to Maintain Dreadlocks

Creative dreadlock styling has changed the reputation of dreadlocks. Today, even fashionable corporate employees style their hair in this way. It is increasingly being disassociated from the image of unclean, unkempt hair and being adopted by professionals who prioritize good grooming and neat hair. It is essential to clean and nourish dreadlocked hair regularly to prevent dryness and other problems. Read on to learn how to maintain dreadlocks:

  1. Wash your dreads at least once a week or, at most, twice a week. Use a clear, mild shampoo to wash off the dirt and hair-product residue. Applying conditioner is optional. Use it if you see a need for it. Use a spray conditioner if you have to. Itís less likely to cause residue build-up than a creamy rinse conditioner. You may have to wash your dreads more often if you sweat a lot on the head during the day. Sweat can definitely make your hair smell bad, so shampooing as needed is a good idea.

  2. Mix apple cider and water in the ratio of 1:3 and use this as a natural cleaning agent for your hair.

This is an excellent cleanser. Unlike commercially sold shampoos, it has no residue. It does not produce suds and lather, but this does not mean that it wonít clean your crowning glory.

  3. Massage your scalp at least twice a day to enhance blood circulation. This will trigger the release of natural oils, which can make the scalp healthier. They will also moisturize your hair without your having to apply foreign substances on your head.

  4. Remedy fuzzy hair with mild conditioners. Spray-on conditioner is preferable to creamy conditioner. The latter generates residue and can attract microbial infestation, making your scalp itchy and irritated. If the problem persists, it wonít do you harm to learn from the experience of long-time dreadlock enthusiasts.

  5. Wrap your dreads in a silk or satin scarf at night. The friction between your dreads and your pillowcase will cause discomfort and make them appear fuzzy. You can use a bonnet or any commercially available wrap as an alternative head covering. The accumulation of lint, a major culprit in your hairís unkempt look, can be prevented if you use a head covering faithfully.

  6. Avoid using large amounts of styling products such as gels, mousses, pomades and beeswax. They will make your hair look good temporarily, but the discomfort due to microbial growth outweighs this benefit. The overuse of these products can even lead to serious scalp problems such as infection if you donít wash them off after wearing them for a day. Use water-soluble shampoos to avoid residue buildup. In the event of their unavailability, use a limited amount of the available shampoo.

It is in your best interests to learn how to maintain dreadlocks. The procedure is easy, but you must be disciplined to carry it out regularly. Make it a part of your daily regimen. This will ensure that your dreadlocks remain attractive for a long time.
