Christmas decorating is a big part of the holiday season. It sets a festive mood and lifts people’s spirits. A Christmas tree has a special distinction as the focal point of a room and the natural gathering place come gift-giving time. The tree has to be decorated gloriously, from the very top – with a glittery star, a lovely angel, a lacy snowflake – to the very bottom – with a tree skirt that matches the decoration in theme, color and festiveness. If you need instructions on how to make a Christmas tree skirt and complete your holiday decorating, then follow the steps below.

  1. Find a suitable material to use for making your tree. It could be anything from felt, velvet, craft fur or any other material you have on hand. Almost anything can be made into a Christmas tree skirt, but you may want to use cloth, as it is washable, more durable and easy to work with.

  2. Make a paper pattern. Cut a circle in pattern paper or other big piece of paper.

could also use a sheet of newspaper. The circle should be as big as you need the skirt to be. If in doubt, put the circle of paper under the tree and see if it is big enough. Then plot where to put the embellishments you may want to put on the skirt. Make sure the embellishments match the color, décor and theme of your tree.

  3. Place the pattern over your material. With a dressmaker’s chalk, transfer the markings on your pattern down on your cloth to serve as guide on where to put the embellishments. Cut out the cloth according to the pattern. Then cut a slit from the edge of the circle to the exact middle. If you have pinking shears, it would be best to use those in cutting the material.

  4. Hem or finish the raw edges of the material so that it will appear neat and won’t unravel. If the material you used is the unraveling kind, then you can skip this step and proceed to the next.

  5. Attach the embellishments to the circle as needed. Sew or glue the embellishments on, according to their placement on the pattern. You can also sew or glue craft fur, ribbon or lace, fringe or tassel, decorative trims, etc. around the rim of the circle.

  6. You could try other design variations as well, for example:

    - Cut the circle in felt twice, using a different color each time. Put one circle on top of the other and make short cuts one inch by six inches long through both circles around the outer edge going in, so that the edges turn into a fringe. Take the fringes two or three at a time and knot them together.

    - Cut a strip of material, perhaps around eight inches wide and four times as long as the outer edge of the circle. Sew the short ends together to form a tube, gather one edge and pin around the outer rim of the circle to form a ruffle, then sew in place.

    - Instead of cutting and sewing, you could knit or crochet the circle and use it as a skirt.

    - Place the skirt around the base of the tree. Admire your handiwork.

Making your own Christmas decoration or giving it as a gift attaches a special significance to the item. It makes people know we love them and care for them.
