How to Make a Doo Rag

If you love bandanas, then you ought to know how to make doo rag too. Virtually, a doo rag is similar to a typical bandana used by a number of men and women. It is a piece of cloth that covers mostly the upper portion of the head. Doo rags are created not only for the purpose of fashion and style but also to protect the head from the heat of the sun. Often, people using motorcycle as means of transportation do use bandanas and doo rags. Today, doo rags become very popular with people living in suburban areas. Individuals undergoing chemotherapy and radiation procedures, as well as outdoor laborers are using doo rags too. If you want to make a casual doo rag, here are the simple tips you should follow.

  1. Prepare the materials needed. Basically, there are only two things you need in order to make a simple doo rag: a piece of old cloth and scissors. The fabric or cloth may be made out of mesh, leather, cotton, or nylon.

  2. Measure the fabric. If you prefer an oldshirt for your doo rag, choose a fabric made out either of nylon or cotton.

While some doo rag lovers choose to use a patterned cloth, others like to design a plain fabric. A fabric measuring two or three square feet is more than sufficient.

  3. Cut the fabric. Depending on your fabric, first cut it down to no bigger than three square feet. That way, you can easily adjust the size in case the doo rag is too big. Use sharp scissors so that the edges of the fabric are smooth and clean.

  4. Create a triangle. Now that you have a square-shape fabric, just hold one corner and bring it to the opposite corner in order to make a triangular shape.

  5. Place the doo rag on your head. Hold the left-most and right-most ends of the fabric (in triangular shape), and place it across your forehead slightly covering your head. Make sure that the center of the doo rag is placed right in the middle of your forehead.

  6. Tie both ends. Bring both ends of the doo rag at the back of your head and tie them together. It's like encircling your head with the fabric, just enough to cover the entire upper part of the scalp. The knot should be as tight as possible in order to keep the doo rag in place, even when the wind blows.

In other countries, a doo rag is the same as doo-rag, durag, or du-rag. Sometimes, it is called "wave cup" or "skull cup." As explained in the Merriam Webster dictionary, the word "do" or "doo" refers to "hairdo." Several decades ago, from 1930s to 1960s to be exact, American and African men utilized doo rags to hold their artificial hairdos in place. Mostly, they used woman's stockings and handkerchiefs for their doo rag. From the 1970s until today, the use of doo rags has become a fashion trend. For a beginner like you, just follow the steps enumerated above on how to make a doo rag. If you are not sure what color to use, choose either plain black or plain white cloth. To have a little accent in your doo rag, you may opt to use a dotted cloth.
