  1.  Choose your fruits. For a frozen fruit smoothie, you can use fresh fruits, frozen fruits, or a combination of both. Freezing your fruits is a great way to preserve their flavor and ripeness and makes for a great smoothie consistency. You can buy frozen fruits or just freeze them yourself. To do this, simply wash and peel the fruits of your choice, cut them up, then freeze on a tray lined with baking parchment. Finally, store them in sandwich bags or zip-up plastic bags.Because fruits make up the base of your concoction, they dictate the flavor and taste. If you prefer a single fruit flavor, make sure that it goes well with the other ingredients, such as milk or yogurt.

    More common smoothie recipes use a variety of fruit combinations that you can mix and match to suit your preferred taste. For starters, try basic combinations like peach and raspberry or the classic strawberry-banana. Other more commonly used fruits are mangos, oranges, pears, blackberries, blueberries and pineapples.   2. Choose your base liquid. The next step to smoothie perfection is choosing the appropriate base liquid to create the right consistency. Most smoothies use milk to add a creamy taste to the fruit flavors; however, there are a multitude of other options. If you want to keep the fruity taste as it is, you can simply add water or ice. You can also use skim milk if you want to avoid any additional fat or plant-based milks like soy or coconut if you’re vegan or simply want other alternatives. Other options are coconut water for that healthy, tropical taste or even green tea for a fresher mix. In addition, you could use fruit juice to pump up the fruity taste, but watch out for the high amount of sugar that some juices have. When adding any of these base liquids, use the same ratio of liquid to your fruit. For example, use one cup of water if you’ve added one cup of fruit.

  3. Add in some thickeners. To achieve the right consistency, a perfect smoothie needs some thickeners for the right texture and feel. Aside from ice, other ingredients you can add are yogurt, extra frozen fruit or an extra ripe banana. Yogurt comes in a lot of varieties, and you can choose from plain or fruit-flavored yogurt, Greek yogurt, and low fat yogurt. You can also add in ice cream or sherbet. Others use peanut butter to add a sweet, nutty flavor, or soft tofu, which doubles as a protein source. You will want to add about one to two parts of your thickener for that great smoothie texture.

  4. Put in some extra flavor or sweetness. If you think the flavor or sweetness of your smoothie mix may need an additional boost, you have many options. For a sweeter mix, add in plain sugar, honey, sugar substitutes like stevia or other zero-calorie sweeteners, agave nectar or maple syrup. You can also pump up the flavor with small amounts of ingredients like vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon, almond extract and peanut butter. For those who want to try something different, add in a bit of cayenne pepper or salt, as long as these go well with your fruit combination.

  5. Pack in some protein or greens. This is entirely optional, but if you’re taking your smoothie as a meal substitute, it’s a great idea to add in other nutrients. For a protein source, you can choose from protein or whey powder, soft tofu, soy, or sprouts. You can also add in some greens as they are barely noticeable and won’t have a large effect on the flavor. Spinach, kale or other leafy greens work well, or you can use green plant powder from your local health food store.

  6. Blend your smoothie! Now that you’ve got all the ingredients ready, you can put them all in the blender and process until you get a smooth, rich consistency.
