How to Make a Paper Machine Gun

How to Make a Paper Machine Gun

If you happen to have a lot of scrap paper around the house, you may want to consider learning how to make a paper machine gun just for kicks. In this post, we teach you how to create one. Making a paper machine gun itself is already fun, but if you have some bored friends looking for something to do on a slow day, you can each create your own machine gun and then play shooting games together. Here’s how you can make your own geeky, recyclable firearm:

  1. First off, you will need a few sheets of paper. If you have some A4 sheets lying around, these are quite perfect. However, you can certainly use whatever is available.

  2. Begin by fashioning the machine gun barrel. Take a sheet of A4 paper, lay it on its long end and roll it up into a tube. Secure it at both ends with some scotch tape to keep it rolled up.

  3. Take another piece of paper and roll it into another tube; only this time, do so from the short edge. Again, secure with tape at both ends.

  4. Roll one more tube from the short edge and secure with tape.

  5. Take all three tubes and line them up together on the table surface. The long tube should be in between the two short ones. Make sure that the butt ends of the three tubes are neatly aligned, while the front end of the long tube protrudes. Tape the ends together to keep them lying flat in this position.

  6. Using a pair of scissors, cut off the end of the long barrel so that it is only about 2 inches longer than the shorter tubes.

  7. Lay the three taped up tubes on another sheet of paper (short side up) and roll it up. You can create creases at the corners of the paper so that it forms a sort of open-ended box rather than a rounded shape. The creases just look better than a rounded shape. Tape it up.

  8. At this point, you will have a bundle where only the longest tube peeks out.

  9. Take a piece of paper that is just big enough to cover the butt end of your bundle with some overlap on the top and bottom. Make two creases so that it has a squared-off shape. Secure with tape.

  10. Cut off two thin strips of paper big enough to cover the front end of the short tubes. Again, fold some creases to give it some shape, then tape individually over the short tubes’ openings. You have just made the barrel.

  11. To create the handle of your paper machine gun, take another piece of paper and roll it into a tube, short side up. Since this is the handle, it needs to be about four times the diameter of the tubes you used for the barrels. Cut the roll in middle and use tape to fasten the ends to create a short, wide tube.

  12. Put creases in the short tube to create a squared-off shape. Once you have it, tape it on the bottom side of your barrel, about 1/3 of the way in from the butt end.

  13. Finally, create a magazine clip. Take a piece of paper and place it short side up and then roll it so that it will easily slide in and out of the “handle.” Secure with tape as before. Put in the creases to make it more square, and you’re done.

As you can see, this tutorial shows you how to make a paper machine gun so basic and simple that even a child can do it. Of course, for older boys, you can increase the difficulty level by using variations on the material like cardboard or even paper mache. Just follow the basic shapes included here and assemble as indicated. Spray paint it silver or black and then add in some  intricate details for a more authentic feel.
