How to Make Candles Step by Step

How to Make Candles Step by Step

Candle making dates back to ancient times, when candles were made out of necessity in order to have light in the darkness. Nowadays, even though candles are seldom used for the sole purpose of lighting up the dark, the art of candle making still lives on. Making homemade candles is both useful and fun, as you can use them during parties, romantic dinners, and even sensual baths. In addition, the candles that you make at home are perfect for gifts during special occasions. If you want to learn how to make candles step by step right inside your own home, check out these instructions:

  1. Prepare all the materials you’ll need:

    1 lb. of paraffin wax

    Wick

    Newspaper or cardboard

    Pen

    Candle or candy thermometer

    Molds

    Coloring agents and scents (optional)

    Water

Double boiler, or a makeshift one

  2. Protect your work area by laying down newspapers, wax paper, towels, rags, or cardboard.

You should also have a basin of warm soapy water on hand in case of spills.

  3. If you don’t have a double boiler, create a makeshift one by filling a large pot or pan halfway with water. Place a smaller pot inside it and let it float on the water. This is necessary because you are not supposed to place candle wax on direct heat, lest it evaporates or starts a fire. It’s also a good idea to use an old pot since paraffin wax is difficult to clean.

  4. Shave or cut the paraffin wax into smaller strips for easier melting.

  5. Place the wax chunks in the smaller pot, and then let the water boil over high heat in order to slowly melt the wax. Use a candy or candle thermometer to keep track of the temperature of the wax. This kind of thermometer can be bought from a craft store. Remember that paraffin wax should be melted at a temperature of 122 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. If you want to make scented candles, you can add the scent once you have melted the paraffin wax. The scent is entirely up to you. You can buy a liquid scent from a craft store. Stir it well with the wax.

  7. If you want a colored candle, you can add the dye at this point. Take note that normal food coloring is water-based and will not work on this. Therefore, you should purchase oil-based dye and add it to your wax.

  8. Get your mold and place the wick at the center. Make sure that it is sticking out at least two inches from the candle. Attach the wick to the mold using double-sided adhesive tape. Keep it in place by rolling the other end of the wick around a pen, and then resting the pen across the top of the mold to hold the wick steady and in the middle. In choosing a mold, make sure that the container can withstand heat. In general, metal molds are the safest ones.

  9. Slowly pour the melted wax into the mold so that it does not spill over. Make sure that the wick stands straight.

  10. Let the wax cool, preferably for 24 hours. Remember that the longer you let it cool, the better your candle will turn out.

  11. Once cool, you may remove the wax from the mold and trim the excess wick down to at least ¼ inch.

As long as you have all the materials that you need, learning how to make candles step by step is very easy. Just be cautious about the melting wax, since it can be a fire hazard. Make sure that you do not leave your melting wax unattended. When it’s all done you will have some lovely, inexpensive gifts to give to family and friends or something to provide a great ambience and decoration for your home.
