Chemical reactions occur when two substances are put together, and they react to form new products. The substances put together are called reactants and the resulting substances are called products. Knowing how to make chemical reactions entails knowing which substances will react to each other and how. It also requires knowledge of basic chemistry. It must be said that mixing chemical substances can be dangerous business since some products can combust, be toxic, or harm you in some way or another. So while it can be fun to see smoke and color changes as a result of chemical reactions, experimenting with chemical substances is to be done with all necessary precautions, such as using the right apparatuses and containers for the chemicals as well never handling them with your bare hands. Products from chemical reactions can come in form of noxious gases or the products themselves can be toxic so we must always be careful when making chemical reactions. Here are steps to follow and remember when experimenting with chemical reactions:

  1. Know the reaction.



    There are several types of reactions, and it is best to decide ahead the kind of reaction you want to perform so as to avoid making dangerous or toxic products unintentionally. There are six general types of reactions:

    Single displacement. This reaction occurs when one element in a compound exchanges places with another element from another compound. The generic equation for the reaction would be: AC + B = A + BC

    Double displacement. In this type of reaction, when elements in both compounds switch places and form two entirely different compounds. The general equation for this reaction looks like this: AB + CD = AD + CB

    Acid-base. An acid base reaction is one that involves an acid and a base, which is a specific type of double displacement reaction. This produces water and a salt. The general equation for this reaction looks like this: HA + BOH = H20 + BA

    Combustion. This reaction is exothermic as it produces heat as a byproduct and occurs when oxygen bonds with another compound to produce water and carbon dioxide (CO2). An example with naphthalene: C10H3 + 12 O2 = 10 CO2 + 4 H2O

    Synthesis. This occurs when two elements bond to form a compound or when two compounds bond to form a more complex one. The equation for this would be: A + B =AB

    Decomposition. This reaction is the opposite of synthesis in that it occurs when a complex compounds breaks down into simpler ones. The equation for this reaction would look like this: AB = A + B

  2. Carefully mix the substances. When you have decided on the kind of reaction you want to do, mix the substance in the smallest possible amounts so you can control the reactions. Glass is the best kind of container for these experiments since plastic can melt and steel can react to the chemicals as well.

Once you know how to make chemical reactions, you should follow all safety precautions, such as never inhaling or ingesting any reactants or products. Also, after mixing, make sure that you responsibly store and dispose of all substances. Mixing chemical substances is not childÂ’s play and so handling such substances must be done with the utmost care.
