How to Make Cinnamon Toothpicks

This tutorial on how to make cinnamon toothpicks will not teach you on how to make toothpicks, although you can probably whittle away a stick until it becomes the size of the toothpick. That lesson over, this article will discuss cinnamon-flavored toothpicks. They make for savory giveaways for simple parties, and you have the opportunity to showcase your DIY skills. They are also very handy as a sugar-free breath freshener with the added bonus of cinnamon being an antiseptic. You can also hand them out as subtle hints.

  1. Prepare

The cinnamon flavor comes from cinnamon bark essential oil. They are sold in health food stores and drugstores. You may need to ask for them because they are sometimes kept behind the counter. Make sure that the oil is safe for consumption. You will need around an ounce, depending on how many toothpicks you would like to flavor. The oil must cover the entire layer of toothpicks.

Cinnamon is a popular flavor, but you can put another essential oil instead, such as peppermint, tea tree, anise, fennel, clove, nutmeg, orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, or vanilla.

Just make sure they can be ingested in small amounts. Wintergreen is an oil you should avoid ingesting.

You will also need a glass jar with a lid and a pair of tongs. Do not use a plastic jar. The jar must be very clean. You can pour boiling water in it to sanitize it or spritz with hydrogen peroxide then let dry.

  2. Soak

Put the toothpicks in the jar and pour in the oil. Shake the jar so that the oil covers the toothpicks evenly. Close the jar tightly and let the toothpicks steep for at least eight hours. The longer the toothpicks are submerged in the oil, the more flavor-infused the toothpicks will be. Note that the cinnamon flavor can become too strong, so don’t let them soak for too long. Overnight should be enough, or the strong flavor will burn someone’s mouth. The lid will keep the cinnamon oil fresh, so it can be reused again.

  3. Dry

Use the tongs or a pair of tweezers to remove the toothpicks from the jar. Place them on paper towels for a few hours until dry. You can also place them on a clean dish towel, but remember that the towel will smell of cinnamon for a while and may be stained. Some people feel that letting them dry on absorbent surfaces is not advisable because the oil is absorbed from the toothpicks. They suggest wax paper, a clean plate, or surface that’s covered in cling wrap plastic.

Do not store toothpicks wet with cinnamon oil in a plastic jar either. They have to be completely dry if stored in a plastic container. Recycle by storing them in clean mint tin cans, lipstick holder, or prescription bottle that has been emptied. You can also put them in a homemade envelope to make pretty giveaways.

As you can see, learning how to make cinnamon toothpicks is a walk in the park. Those who are trying to quit smoking suck on these sticks to satisfy their oral compulsion. They have something in their mouths so they won’t miss cigarettes as much. It also keeps their breath fresh too. Those dieting can enjoy the weight-loss inducing properties of cinnamon. Cinnamon lessens the feeling of hunger and does not contain any sugar or calories. Note that there are commercially made cinnamon toothpicks from branches of the cinnamon tree. They fight tooth decay and help keep the gums healthy too. There has even been a study posited that using cinnamon toothpicks may boost brain activity.
