How to Make Cupcakes from Scratch

Cupcakes werenít discovered until the year 1979. Before that time, there were only cakes, rolls, bread and the like. Today, we enjoy all sorts of cupcakes and a wide variety of flavors, toppings, fillings, frostings and decorations. Over time, more and more people have learned how to make cupcakes from scratch. In addition, many people have come up with amazing flavors and combinations. More often than not, cupcakes are paired with yummy frostings and fillings that make the flavors more interesting. There are more than a thousand recipes for different cupcake flavors. Despite the multitudes of complex flavors, the basic recipes are still the same. There is always a general way of making the most basic cupcake. The following recipe is for a basic vanilla flavored cupcake. Here are the steps:

  1. Prepare all the ingredients that you need. For this certain cupcake, you will need the following: two and one-fourth cups of all-purpose flour, half a cup of cream shortening, 3 teaspoons of baking powder, one and one-third cups of white sugar, a half teaspoon of salt, a cup of milk, a teaspoon of pure vanilla extract and two large eggs.



  2. Make sure that you have an electric mixer, a cupcake pan, paper liners, a medium-sized ice cream scooper and an oven. If you donít have an electric mixer, you can use an ordinary glass bowl along with a hand mixer; it will take longer, but itíll do.

  3. Before making the actual batter, preheat the oven to 340 degrees. This will make the process smoother. Also, line the cupcake molder with cupcake liners. This will make the removal of the cooked cupcakes easier.

  4. Put the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar into the bowl. Turn the mixer on low speed then add in shortening, vanilla and milk.

  5. Increase the speed to medium and continue to mix it for a minute to a minute and a half. Constantly scrape the sides of the bowl for any loose ingredients.

  6. Add the eggs one at a time. Continue beating the mixture for another minute under medium speed. Again, scrape off the sides of the bowl constantly. After this, increase the speed to high and let it mix for another minute and a half or until everything is well mixed. Make sure that everything is well incorporated, but donít over mix the batter.

  7. Using the medium-sized ice cream scooper, scoop a substantial amount of batter into the paper liner. Make sure that you donít fill the entire paper liner. Leave some room for the cupcake to rise during the cooking process.

  8. Bake the cupcakes for 20 to 25 minutes. You will know when they are ready by inserting a toothpick into the center of a cupcake. When it comes out clean, theyíre ready to go.

  9. Let the cupcakes cool down for at least five minutes before taking them out of the cupcake pan.

  10. If you want to, you can apply frostings and decorations.

From this simple recipe, you add more ingredients and come up with different cupcake flavors. The key to experimenting with new flavors is to learn how to make cupcakes from scratch. From there, the possibilities are endless!
