How to Make Essential Oil at Home

You don’t have to invest a lot of money to be able to test which essential oil is suitable for your condition – when you know how to make essential oils at home. These oils not only have therapeutic abilities but cosmetics purposes as well. Most have medicinal properties that deal with the root cause of many diseases. Distilling the mixture is the most popular way to make essential oils. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Gather your materials. The base oil can be any refined oil like olive, almond, safflower or canola. Almond is good for cosmetics. Cut the petals of the flowers before they bloom. Lavender, roses, marigold, jasmine, orange, wallflower, lily and honeysuckle are some good choices. Chopped herbs must be doubled because they are more subtle than flowers. Peppermint, rosemary, lemon, and marjoram are examples of herbs for essential oils. Cloves, coriander, cinnamon and cumin are recommended for the crushed spices.

  2. Buy a distilling apparatus or improvise one, if you are mechanically inclined.

ou will need a furnace, fuel, tank for the water and drained remains, condenser and separator – separates the end product from the water vapor.

  3. Obtain your raw materials. If you are not harvesting your fresh components personally, choose intact (or whole) plants, herbs or spices. They must be healthy and without any bruises. Ask for the harvest date – the newer, the better.

  4. In order not to lose much oil, dry the fresh materials away from the sun. You will then be able to add more plants into your mixture because dried materials are more compressed. Distill right after drying and never allow them to become wet with water again.

  5. Fill your distiller tank with soft purified water. Never let it run dry. To be sure, stock up for 6 hours of use. The water should be close to the false bottom. Although the plants are stored there, they should never come in contact with the water.

  6. Pack the fresh materials into the distiller filling it to the top. Dried pants don’t need to be cut. Allow them to rest at the false bottom with minimized contact with the distiller edges. Leave at least 2 inches from the plant layer to the steam outlet.

  7. Close the apparatus and bring the water to a boil. The oils should be extracted from the plants when the temperature has reached 212 degrees Fahrenheit or the boiling point.

  8. Check the distiller often to make sure that it will not run out of water. Use cheesecloth to filter the oil after the distilling process. It is essential to use hygienic drainer cloth to avoid contaminating the essential oil.

  9. Funnel the pure essential oil into a dark storage container for a longer life span. Place the dark sterilized container in a cool, dry and dark place to preserve the oil for two years or more.

It’s definitely possible to learn how to make essential oils at home. With constant practice, you can improve your formula to come up with quality products in the near future. You can also improve on your technological process depending on your motivation. If you are just making these essential oils for personal use, there may be no more need to do further research into the advanced methods available in the industry today.
