Gak or goo became popular because of the Nickelodeon’s use of it during the annual Nickelodeon’s Kids Awards. Whether you want to make gak for your kids’ science projects or you simply want to have fun, creating gak at home is a simple, fun, and educational activity that you can do with your kids. Learning how to make gak in just a few minutes will give you hours of entertainment. Moreover, the procedure of making gak can also stir the interest of kids in science, since it involves mixing different ingredients, including Borax, a laundry aid that can easily be found in department and grocery stores. If you want to learn how to create gak, here are the steps:
Gather all the necessary components:
Plastic food storage bags
½ cup of water
Cup or jar
1 tablespoon of Borax
Spoons or popsicle sticks for crafts
1 cup of hot water
½ cup of white school glue
Use the old newspapers as placemats to avoid dirtying your table or floor. Spread them across your flat work station. Place your mixing bowl in the middle.
Add the ½ cup of water and ½ cup of white glue to your mixing bowl. Using your spoon or Popsicle craft stick, stir the mixture until the two substances are well-blended.
Add two to five drops of food coloring to your mixture. This will be the color of your gak. The most popular gak colors include orange, yellow, green, and blue. However, you can use any color you want.
Mix one cup of water and one tablespoon of borax in a separate jar or cup. If your jar has a lid, shake the mixture vigorously. Otherwise, you can just stir the mixture using a spoon or Popsicle stick until the borax has dissolved.
Add another ½ teaspoon of borax to the solution, then stir it well until it completely dissolves. Keep on adding ½ teaspoons of borax until the solution cannot absorb anymore. It means that the solution is completely saturated.
Add two tablespoons of this borax mixture into the bowl with the glue and water mixture. Whip the mixture continuously until you are able to create a slimy gak ball. If the goo is very sticky, add more borax and whip it once again. You can also knead the mixture with your hands if your spoon can no longer handle it.
You can store your finished gak globs in plastic food storage box. Usually, these globs can last for several weeks before drying. If the globs dry, you can restore them to their previous slimy state by adding a small amount of water. However, the gak can only last for so long and eventually, you will have to discard it once it becomes completely dry.
Remember that when making gak, you have to wear an apron as food coloring can stain your clothes. It is also best to wear gloves since it can also stain your skin. The finished product will also stain initially, but as it gets older, it can be handled without staining anything.
You can use your knowledge on how to make gak to do simple homemade projects with your kids. You can also give gak as a gift to other kids since they will surely enjoy throwing it around. It is also pretty safe because it is soft and slimy. Just watch out for any accidental ingestion of gak, especially if there are young toddlers around. This may not be safe due to the presence of Borax and glue in the ingredients.
