Some people may feel there’s something missing during Christmas if gingerbreads are nowhere in sight. You can prevent this from happening when you know how to make gingerbread cookies. Everyone owes this to you, and you’ll be pleased to give in to their wishes. Baking your own gingerbread is the same as baking any other cookies. You have to follow directions to make them right. Here’s how to do them:

  1. Make sure you have the necessary baking utensils and equipment: mixing spoons, cookie cutters, measuring spoons, cookie sheets, mixing bowls, cooling racks, measuring cups, and oven mitts.

  2. Do not miss any of the ingredients to attain the traditional taste, texture and form: 1 cup molasses, 1 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 1/2 teaspoons ginger and ground cloves, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 sticks unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 2 eggs, and 5 cups of sifted all-purpose flour plus 2 tablespoons of water.

  3. Mix butter and sugar until creamy.

  4. Add eggs, molasses, and water. Mix well until they become blended with the creamy mixture. They will be a little harder to mix at this time.

  5. Put the dry ingredients together. Add the dry ingredients into the butter mixture and blend thoroughly. Use folding strokes when blending them. You can feel that the mixture is starting to solidify, but there must be enough moisture left so as not to make your dough too dry for the mold.

  6. Chill for at least three hours or overnight to let the dough grow. You can see the obvious growth of the mass after the designated time. It will almost seem like your dough is alive and breathing.

  7. Roll out the dough onto a lightly floured cookie sheet. The dough must be pressed against a flat and sturdy surface. Roll the dough thoroughly until totally flattened.

  8. Cut out shapes using the cookie cutters. There are various designs to choose from, but make sure to have one of the commonly used gingerbread man shapes because he’s the most popular character according to tradition.

  9. Arrange the cutout shapes an inch apart on the cookie sheet. Bake for 5 minutes at 375 degrees. Pre-heat the oven for faster results.

  10. Let them cool on a rack before decorating the cookies. You can add the eyes, nose, and ears plus other features of the gingerbread man. You can even dress it up using some simple drawing techniques.  Perhaps putting a belt on, adding lines for the sleeves and shorts, plus additional buttons.

Eyes and buttons can be made using gumdrops, raisins, red cinnamon candies, or chocolate chips. You can also mix beaten egg yolks with food coloring. Paint your cookies before they go in the oven. Another way is to cut out accessories from scrap pieces of gingerbread. You can make hats, scarves, or bow ties. Use royal icing to glue them onto your gingerbread men for a 3D effect. Spread a thin layer of icing on your gingerbread man and cover it with sprinkles or colored sugar. You can do many tricks on how to make gingerbread cookies.  Do not limit your gingerbread designs to gingerbread men only. You can also make gingerbread women, children, and pets. Royal icing can be used to outline your desired shapes. It can also be used to draw on clothes, faces, accessories. Tinted royal icing will really make your gingerbread creations stand out.
