How to Make Healthy Dog Food at Home

Healthy dog food should be the top concern of every dog owner.  This is the key for your dog to have a long and healthy life. Giving your pet commercially available dog food every day is unhealthy. Many findings prove that prolonged consumption can lead to kidney problems. Others have allergic reactions to it, which lead to skin problems, irritability and stress. Follow these pointers on how to make healthy dog food at home:

  1. When you go shopping, be on the lookout for affordable vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, lettuce and cabbage. Dog food should be 30% vegetables, 30% carbohydrates and 40% meat.  For the carbohydrates you can use brown rice, potatoes or oatmeal. For the meat, ground beef, pork, turkey, chicken or lamb are the popular choices.

  2. You can sauté the meat with a little garlic in olive oil and let it turn golden brown.  For the vegetable portion, you can mix it with the meat or you can blanch it and mix it together with boiled carbohydrates. Mix these ingredients thoroughly and maybe add an egg for flavor and additional nutrients.

tion it according to your dog’s meal size. Refrigerate the quantity that can be consumed within three days and freeze the rest. During meal time, re-heat the portion you will give to your pet. Dogs prefer eating their food warm rather than cold. The aroma produced while you heat it can also enhance your pet’s appetite.

  3. Add some spices like oregano or basil to your recipe to enhance the taste and aroma. Some spices have a therapeutic effect while some have additional nutritive value. Do not deprive your dog of this as it will lead to improved health.

  4. Ask for advice from a veterinarian if you should add any supplement like multivitamins to your recipe.  He will make suggestions based on your dog’s health condition.  If it is aging, more supplements may be needed, but if it is still young and healthy, supplements may not be necessary. Also, if your dog is used to commercially available dog food, you have to slowly introduce it to your recipe. You can do mix feeding at the start, slowly increasing the volume of homemade dog food gradually. Some will not readily accept the change, but when they get hungry, they will eat whatever is in their bowls.

  5. Healthy dog food should be nutritious, fresh and, most of all, delicious.  Take note of your dog’s preferences. If the recipe you cooked does not interest it, then there is no use cooking the same thing again, even if it is really very nutritious. Ensure that the smell is enticing.

Learning how to make healthy dog food at home is a skill you must really develop.  The health benefits exceed those of commercially available brands. Not to mention the fact that commercial dog food is more expensive. Experiment on some new recipes so that your pet will always look forward to the next feeding. Rewards from your pet will follow, in the form of loving gestures.
