Meatballs are a popular food for individuals of all ages. This childhood comfort food continues to satisfy as adulthood approaches. Learn the steps on how to make meatballs if you want to enjoy this delicious and versatile dish. There are many versions of meatballs. Typically, meatballs require the use of three meats -- beef, pork and lamb. However, you can also make use of just one meat. Meatballs can be served as a dish with a special gravy sauce, or you can add them to spaghetti or a soup. Forming the meat mixture into balls is the fun part! The method of cooking meatballs depends on your own preference. Some like to bake or deep fry meatballs, which retains the dish’s spherical shape. Others like to fry meatballs, even though the balls of meat lose their shape in the process. Here are the steps:

  1. Place your preference of ground meat into a bowl. Add some seasonings and spices such as onion, garlic, salt and pepper. You can also add some cayenne pepper and oregano to enhance flavor. If you have kids, you can always grate some carrots and celery to alter the taste and keep the meat moist.


  2. Add one egg to hold the mixture together, especially when forming a ball. If the outcome is too moist for you, you may add some breadcrumbs. It is always better to mix all the ingredients using your hand, but you can also use a spoon.  Mix lightly and avoid overdoing it. Once everything is incorporated into the mixture, proceed to the next step.

  3. Use an ice cream scooper to make the balls. Alternatively, gather a portion of the meat mixture in your palm and circle it in your hand until it forms a ball. Place all the balls in a plate or tray.

  4. Heat your pan and add some oil. Place the meatballs in the pan. You may need to prepare the meatballs in batches if you have made too many. Avoid overcrowding the pan since you will be rolling the meatballs to maintain their shape. You can roll or flip them using a spatula, just be sure to brown all sides.

  5. You can now pour in the sauce and let it simmer for a while. This will ensure that the insides are cooked thoroughly, despite cooking on a low heat. Finish cooking your meatballs by placing them in an oven.

  6. If you want to add meatballs to a soup, after browning all the sides, simply add them to your hot soup and cook for 15 minutes, depending on the size of the meatballs.

  7. If you want the meatballs as separate dish, you can just brown the sides then put them in a 375-degree oven for 20 minutes. Adjust your timing according to the size of the meatballs. You may want to use a meat thermometer to guide you. The insides should be at least 150 degrees. The good thing about cooking in the oven is that the meatballs will retain their perfect shape.
