How to Make Olive Oil Soap

Olive oil has long been known for its health benefits, especially for the skin. Its skin care benefits date back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. Now, it is a known remedy for several skincare problems, such as stretch marks, acne, and aging. Olive oil contains vitamins A and E, which act as antioxidants that help reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging. It also contains an anti-inflammatory compound known as hydroxytyrosol. Furthermore, olive oil acts as a moisturizer and exfoliator for your skin. Learning how to make olive oil soap will help you reap these skincare benefits and, at the same time, save you money from buying commercial olive oil soaps. Hence, here are the steps in making your own olive oil soap:

  1. Prepare your ingredients. In making olive oil soap, you will need two and a half cups of olive oil, 5 tablespoons of sodium hydroxide or lye crystals, one cup of distilled water, and isopropyl alcohol spray. Aside from these, you will also need a plastic container, two glass containers, a large pot, a thermometer, a mold for soap, and some plastic wrap.

As an alternative for the mold, you can use a quart size milk carton with the top cut off.

  2. Pour the olive oil into the plastic container. Place this container in a large pot filled with hot tap water so that the plastic container begins to float. Set the pot on the stove and turn the burner on low heat. If you have a thermometer, you can insert it into the oil.

  3. Make sure that you don protective equipment such as a mask, goggles, and gloves, since mixing lye with liquid causes a chemical reaction.

  4. Create your lye mixture by pouring one cup of distilled water into a glass container. Make sure that this glass container can withstand heat. Pour the lye crystals into a separate glass container, and then slowly add the crystals to the distilled water, stirring it with a spatula while doing so. Remember not to inhale above this container since it will emit fumes. In addition, keep in mind that this mixture easily heats up, so it is best to insert a thermometer into the mixture in order to monitor its temperature. Both the lye mixture and the olive oil should reach a temperature of 110 degrees Fahrenheit.

  5. Once both the olive oil and the lye mixture have reached the prescribed temperature, combine the lye mixture with the olive oil by pouring the mixture into the plastic container containing the olive oil. Blend this mixture until it looks like thick gravy with drizzled trails on top.

  6. Pour this whole mixture into your mold or milk carton and refrigerate it for 30 minutes, uncovered. Afterwards, remove it from the refrigerator and spray the top part with isopropyl alcohol.

  7. Cover the mold with plastic wrap and put it back in the refrigerator. Leave it there overnight, after which you will remove it from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature.

  8. After 48 hours, you can finally remove the soap from the mold. If necessary, you can cut the olive oil soap bars into smaller soap pieces. This recipe can make up to eight bars of olive oil soap.

Knowing how to make olive oil soap can help you take care of your skin in an economical way. Just be careful with handling the lye mixture, since lye can easily heat up any liquid to which it is added. If you don’t want to deal with lye, you can remove it from the process and use a readymade soap base instead.
