Organic fertilizers are better than chemical ones and they produce better results. Here are some ways on how you can make fertilizers from organic ingredients for your vegetables:

  1. Gather all the ingredients needed. Before you can create your own organic fertilizer mix, you have to put together all that you will need. An effective fertilizer is comprised of four parts seed meal, ¼ ordinary agricultural lime, ¼ part gypsum, ½ part dolomitic lime, 1 part bone meal, rock phosphate or high-phosphate guano and half to one part kelp meal or one part basalt dust.

l of these ingredients must be measured by volume or by scoops or by buckets.

These ingredients that are needed for the creation of the organic fertilizer are inexpensive when compared to the results they produce. The best source for large bags of seed meals are farm feed and grain dealer. You may find the other ingredients at your local garden shops. However, they may be sold at a higher price and in smaller bags.

  2. Mix the ingredients. To create the organic fertilizer for your vegetables, you have to mix all the ingredients in a uniformed manner. Stir the mixture well to evenly distribute all the ingredients. The mixture you have prepared with a 5 gallon plastic bucket should produce about 14 quarts of fertilizer.

  3. Apply the fertilizer mix. Fertilizing the soil at least once a year before planting is good enough to produce quality vegetables. Application of fertilizers depends on the needs of the plant. The soil of light feeders such as carrots, radish and onions need four quarts of fertilizer along with a quarter inch of compost per 100 square feet. On the other hand, corn, potatoes, squash and tomatoes, which are classified as heavy feeders, need 6 quarts of fertilizer with half an inch of compost over 100 square feet. When planting on a hill, add a cup of fertilizer to each mixture while heavy clay soils require more compost and 50 percent more fertilizer.

Remember to sprinkle small amounts of fertilizer to your soil during the growing season. Do this every three to four weeks, especially to medium and high demand vegetables. Do this as thinly as possible and do not over fertilize as it can damage your vegetables and soil. Organic fertilizers are easy to prepare and the ingredients are also readily available at garden stores.
