How to Make Polymer Clay

Creating homemade polymer clay might take a bit of trial and error at first. Although it is possible to make your own polymer clay at home, you have to keep in mind that it works the same way but might shrink more. You can use polymer clay to create craft projects like beads, sculptures, buttons, and ornaments. Its fine texture and bright colors make it ideal for craft-making. If you want to learn how to make polymer clay, here are three ways to do it. Polymer Clay Recipe#1:

  1. Prepare the following ingredients:

    1 cup cornstarch

    1/2 cup water

1 cup polyvinyl acetate glue (e.g. Elmer’s glue)

    1 ½ tablespoons glycerin

    1 ½ tablespoons lanolin-containing cold cream

    1 ½ tablespoons white vinegar

    Tempura powder (optional)

  2. In a Teflon-coated pot, mix the cornstarch with the water until it has been completely dissolved.

  3. Next, add the glue, cream, glycerin, and vinegar. Cook the ingredients over low heat, making sure to stir constantly. Do this until dough forms and starts to pull away from the sides. Make sure that you do not overcook it, or the dough will harden. If you are cooking over a gas stove, use a heat diffuser under the pot to prevent the dough from burning.

  4. You may also add tempura powder to your mixture while you are cooking it if you want your clay to be colored. A small amount of tempura powder means light or pastel colors. More tempura powder brings about bold and bright colors. As you continue to stir, add more powder as needed.

  5. Remove the dough from the heat and cover it with a damp cloth. Allow the mixture to cool until you can handle it.

  6. Knead the dough with your hands until it achieves the consistency of smooth clay.

  7. Store your homemade polymer clay in an airtight container and place it in a cool, dark place. Every time you need to use your clay, you might need to knead it until it regains its malleability.

Polymer Clay Recipe #2:
  1. Prepare the following ingredients:

    2/3 cup water, room temperature

    2 cups salt

    1 cup cornstarch

    ½ cup ice water

    Tempura powder (optional)

  2. In a pan, mix the tepid water and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch and ice water and set it aside.

  3. Heat the salt mixture over low heat while stirring constantly. Do this for about four minutes, making sure that you do not boil the water. If you are using a gas stove, use a heat diffuser at the bottom of the pan to avoid burning the mixture.

  4. If you want to color your polymer clay, add the tempura powder a little at a time, still stirring, until you get the color you want.

  5. Remove the salt mixture from the heat and quickly add the cornstarch and water mixture. If your mixture appears to be too thin, return it to the pan and heat it on low heat while stirring constantly until it achieves a clay consistency.

  6. Store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Polymer Clay Recipe #3:
  1. Prepare the following ingredients:

    1 cup polyvinyl acetate glue

    1 cup cornstarch

2 tablespoons baby oil or mineral oil

    1 tablespoon lemon juice

    Tempura powder (optional)

  2. Combine all the ingredients in a Teflon-coated pot and cook them on low heat, stirring constantly for 10 minutes or until a dough forms. A heat diffuser might be necessary for gas stoves.

  3. Like the previous recipes, you may add tempura powder for coloring your polymer clay.

  4. Remove the mixture from the heat and allow it to cool enough to be handled.

  5. Once cool, knead it into a smooth clay consistency.

  6. Store it in an airtight container and place it in a cool and dark place.

Knowing how to make polymer clay is important if you love using clay for your crafts. You can save money and be able to refill your clay stock easily, using ingredients that are readily found at home or in your local store.
