how to make polymer clay molds

Jewelry owes the realization of its designs to the polymer clay molds. Most jewelry manufacturers subcontract the creation of clay molds for their designs to clay molding factories. The additional labor and material costs for the clay molds will have to be sustained by increasing the wholesale price of this jewelry. Smart jewelry makers explore the possibilities of making their own molds to be more competitive. Hereís how to make polymer clay molds:

  1. Find an object that is hard, solid, that is heat resistant. You will need this to be replicated as the base of your polymer clay mold. The clay must be flexible to be able to wrap it around the object.

  2. If a personís body is conditioned by having a massage, the clay is the same. Kneading it will condition its consistency. It will prevent lumps and other impurities from forming. Your bare hands can do magic with the clay. The natural heat will make the clay relax thus making it more conditioned. Take some time for this process because the condition of your clay will affect the overall quality of your mold.

If the clay is too hard, use a rolling pin, but this should be the last resort. Once the flexibility, color, and softness reach your standard, you can start making the mold.

  3. Prepare your working area that has a flat and firm surface. Lay the hard objectís flat side against the surface of your wax paper covered working table. Add clay to the front side of the object. Place a portion of the conditioned clay on the front side. If it resembles a face, fill in the details of the face with thinner clay to show the features like the nose, eyes, and lips. This is just an example.† In the case of a jewelry mold, the outline of the jewelry sculpted in the mold must be filled up with clay accordingly. The layer applied must be around one-quarter of an inch thick. Test the removal of the clay by pulling it off gently. If it sticks, do the process again, but this time cover the object with aluminum foil.

  4. Aside from aluminum foil, you can also grease the external part of the hard object with mineral oil. This must be removed thoroughly, though, by wiping it off gently with cotton. Cooking oil and water are other alternatives. All these can prevent the polymer clay from sticking to the object to be molded.

  5. Clean up your completely molded clay with a sharp tool like a knife. Repeatedly press the clay to the hard object firmly to allow it to embrace the shape of the original.

  6. Transfer the newly molded clay to a cookie tray. Take note that this tray should not be used again for foods. Read the polymer baking directions again to make sure that you have not overlooked anything important. Load the cookie tray with the clay mold to the oven. Bake for 25 minutes at not more than 275 degrees. Aluminum foil can cover and protect the cookie tray if you do not have one to sacrifice for this project. Remove the tray from the oven and allow it to cool.

  7. When the clay mold has cooled completely, you can already start the careful removal of the polymer clay replica from the original object. You can now use the new polymer mold for the new production with the necessary revisions if there are any. If you feel like you need the help of a releasing agent, in addition to applying oil you can try powder.

  8. Do not use the new polymer clay mold before letting it cure at room temperature for at least two days.

How to make Polymer clay molds is an advantageous know-how for your business. Design alterations can now become handy for jewelry makers. Just make sure that revisions are done before the polymer clay mold has been cured completely.
