How to Make Soft Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies are one of the most-loved cookies in the entire world, and they’re especially popular during the holidays. You usually see them in all sorts of shapes, elaborately decorated with the most vibrant colors imaginable, and wrapped up in fancy bags or boxes. They definitely make the holidays a lot more festive.

But sometimes, getting the recipe right is just as important as the decorations and packaging. It’s always a shame if a first bite turns your smile upside down. Luckily, this recipe on how to make soft sugar cookies offers the answer to your troubles. These cookies have a slightly crispy edge and a soft chewy center. They hold their shape even after baking, which makes them perfect for cut-out cookies.

  1.  To make a batch of 24 to 30 medium-sized cookies, you need the following ingredients: a. 1 cup butter at room temperature b. 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar c.  1 large egg e.  2 teaspoons vanilla extract f.   ½ teaspoon salt g.   ½ teaspoon baking powder h.   2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

  2.  In a medium bowl, combine butter and sugar with a handheld mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment for about 3 minutes until the mixture becomes light and creamy.

    he egg and vanilla extract.

  3.  In a separate bowl, whisk together the salt, baking powder, and all-purpose flour. Then, add half of this dry mixture into the creamed mixture, and stir until well combined. Next, add the rest of the dry ingredients, and keep mixing until the flour is well incorporated into the batter. At this point, you should have soft cookie dough.

  4. Roll the dough into a ball, and cover with plastic wrap. Chill it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

  5.  When you are ready to bake the cookies, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

  6.  To shape your cookies, scoop about 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons of dough and roll them into balls and flatten them to about ¼ inch thick circles. Place them onto the baking sheets 2 to 3 inches apart. You could also use cookie cutters. To do so, lightly sprinkle your work area with flour to prevent the dough from sticking, or you could roll your dough on parchment paper and forgo the flour. Roll the dough to about a ¼-inch thick sheet. Use cookie cutters to cut out different shapes, and space them out on the baking sheet.

  7. Bake the cookies for 8 to 10 minutes. Do not over bake, or your cookies will be crispy, rather than soft and chewy.

  8.  Let the cookies cool for a few minutes on the baking sheets.

  9. Transfer the cookies onto a wire rack to cool completely.

  10. Frost and decorate your cookies, or serve as is.

Now that you’ve learned the secret on how to make soft sugar cookies, you have the power to change the world—or the sugar cookie world at least. Say goodbye to rock hard cookies, and hello to soft chewy cookies that taste just as good as they look.
