How to Make Your Hands Look Younger

Your hands are two of the most-often used parts of your body. Therefore, they're likely to get a pretty good battering and may look older than their biological age. You don't want that to happen, right? It's not hard to learn how to make your hands look younger—just take note of the following tips and do them consistently:

  1. The very first step involves keeping your hands' current condition from worsening. This means you should ditch harsh soaps and use a product with moisturizing properties. Switch out your hand sanitizers to skin-friendlier formulas to avoid drying out your skin.

  2. Wear gloves when you're washing up, driving, or doing tasks that may cause injuries, calluses, or dryness. Use the right type of gloves for various activities, and wash them regularly to prevent odors and the growth of microorganisms.

  3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. You need to moisturize your hands more often than other parts of your body, especially after you wash your hands or expose them to heat or other elements.

This is because the skin on the back of your hands is thinner than most other areas and thus is more likely to show signs of wrinkling and aging. This moisturizing habit may take a while to get used to, but it's one of the most effective ways of helping your hands look young. Also, you don't have to use an expensive cream; you can even make some of your own at home.

  4. Use an umbrella or apply sunscreen on your hands whenever you step out during the day. Beauty editor Dawn Davis says that sun damage is one of the leading culprits of aging hands. So keep those solar rays from zapping the life out of your digits and shield them from the sun.

  5. Exfoliate once a week to slough off dead skin cells and make your hands look more rejuvenated. You can use a wet washcloth or a scrubbing device suitable for hands, or you can use an exfoliating product. If you want a homemade solution, mix equal parts of olive oil and sugar and rub them onto your hands. Wipe off afterwards or wash if your hands feel a bit too greasy.

  6. Treat your hands to a light massage every now and then so you boost circulation and enhance their appearance. A reflexology hand massage can also be beneficial to your health.

  7. Don't forget to take good care of your nails too. Trim and moisturize them regularly with cuticle oil. Avoid removing your cuticles; doing so may increase the risk of infection. Simply push them back after taking a shower or moisturizing your hands. Also, let your nails rest and avoid putting on nail polish at certain periods each month so they have the opportunity to recover.

  8. If you want more “aggressive” measures, you can use products containing retinol, like Retin-A, or some other antioxidant so that the skin on your hands renews itself.

  9. To repair what damage has been done, consider getting laser treatment, which can eliminate hyperpigmentation. Chemical peels can smoothen out your hands as can fat injections or “fillers.” To treat large, protruding blue veins, sclerotherapy may be your answer.

The key to how to make your hands look younger is treating your hands the way you care for your face. After all, both parts of your body are similarly sensitive to the effects of the elements and aging.
