How to Naturally Lighten Hair

How to Naturally Lighten Hair

Changing up the natural shade of your crowning glory can do wonders for your appearance. Lightening it up even just a bit can take off a year or more from your face, giving you a youthful and rejuvenated aura. If you want to engineer such a hair makeover without having to use hair dyes that tend to contain harsh chemicals, or simply reduce your hair-coloring costs, take a look at these tips on how to naturally lighten hair:

  1. A popular and traditional natural option is to use lemon juice, which, due to its acidity, is a natural hair lightener. Simply squeeze out the golden liquid from fresh lemons and rinse your hair with it. Allow the juice to set into your hair for about 10-20 minutes. You'll notice your strands getting crunchy as it dries up. When this happens, it's time to remove the juice with water.

  2. To avoid overly drying your hair, you can mix some olive oil into the lemon juice. Olive oil can create a lightening effect, unlike water. However, you'll need some shampoo to rinse the mixture from your hair.

If you don't really use shampoo, you may think twice about doing this step. Do know, though, that brunettes cannot expect to get really blonde hair with this solution. Those on the darker side may get orange tresses if the juice is left on too long.

  3. You can try using honey to lighten your crowning glory's hue a bit. To reduce the stickiness of this naturally saccharine ingredient, add some water to make it easier to spread onto your hair. For a more powerful effect, you can mix one part apple cider vinegar to four parts of honey, instead of water. Let this concoction sit for up to an hour.

  4. After protecting your clothes with a towel or plastic sheet, spread the mixture little by little onto your tresses with your fingers so you're better able to spread it evenly and gradually throughout your hair.

  5. Once applied, cover your hair with a shower cap and let the mixture stay on for no less than two hours. If you want a lighter effect, let the application stay on even longer than that. Allowing it to settle in your hair overnight will give you even lighter results. Just make sure you cover up your pillows before you go to bed.

  6. Rinse the honey out of your hair with warm water. Shampoo and condition after doing so.

  7. A henna powder and chamomile powder combo is suitable for those with dark hair. Simply mix the two together with just enough hot water to create a thick paste. After this mix has cooled down, comb or brush it onto wet hair. Place a shower cap over your locks and let it stay for about 30 minutes to 2 hours. If your hair is really dark or black, leave it on even longer.

  8. Black tea is another natural option you can try. Simply get a teabag or two, depending on the length and volume of your hair, and immerse them in a bowl of boiling water to steep. Let the tea cool down and rinse your hair with it. Leave it on for about 15-30 minutes and repeat three to six times, until you achieve the level of lightness you want. The tannic acid in black tea can bring out your highlights gradually.

  9. A pot of brewed coffee can rejuvenate your natural highlights, especially if you are a brunette. Once the brew has cooled, transfer it into a spray bottle and spray it all over your locks. Then, go out in the sun for about 30 minutes, making sure you've applied sunscreen on your body and face beforehand. Just make sure you don't go out during the middle of the day. You can time this procedure when you're out on the beach or are going out to get a tan.

Another alternative to how to naturally lighten hair is using a shampoo and conditioner line designed to lighten your hair gradually with daily use.
