Gardening is a passion.  It entails patience, hard work and perseverance.  You have an option whether to have a flower garden, medicinal garden or a vegetable garden.  Each kind has its rewards, but having your own vegetable garden is the most rewarding.  You can just pick the vegetable you need for your daily consumption and be confident that it is free from harmful fertilizers and pesticides.  A professional gardener once said that vegetables picked from his garden always taste better than those bought from the market.  Here are the procedures on how to plant a vegetable garden in your backyard:

  1. Make a layout and design your proposed vegetable garden.  Decide where to build it, bearing in mind the important requirement – sunshine. Determine the size of your available space and draw it first in pencil.  Measure distances between beds and decide the size of your garden bed.  Research books or online for recommendations.  You can also talk to some gardeners in your area or maybe pay a visit to your local garden market.  Ask relevant questions and gather information that you will need to know, especially concerning the kind of vegetables that thrive on the kind of soil that you have.

  2. Acquire the tools and materials that you will need.  You will need a fork, a spade, a hoe, a trowel and a rake. If you can afford it, purchase a rotary cultivator to make the job easy for you.  If not, then you can just rent one. A wheelbarrow is usually needed to easily transport things that you will need.  Purchase the seeds of the vegetables that you intend to plant and sow these in preparation for planting. It is wise to have your soil tested to know what vegetables can likely flourish on the type of soil that you have. Crops respond differently to various kinds of soil.

  3. Do the actual preparation work for your vegetable garden.  Cultivate the soil in your garden using a cultivator that you acquired or rented.  The soil in your garden should be loosening up to allow the plants to easily grow. Water the area to moisten the soil and remove stones and unwanted materials in the process.  Form the beds and pathways as measured in your layout.  Decide whether you want a raised or a flat bed.  It is best to install a fence around your garden to protect it from invading deer and rabbits. Also add 2 inches of compost to improve the soil’s nutrient content.

  4. You are now ready to plant your seedlings, bearing in mind the standard spacing of 18 to 24 inches. Water the new plants and mulch around it to prevent soil from drying up.  Now all you need to do is to water and pull off weeds as needed and wait for your plants to grow.

The best time to dig your garden is during early spring.  The soil is moist enough to easily dig through, but not so wet that soil is muddy.  Learning and properly executing how to plant a vegetable garden in your backyard is the best hobby you can have.  You and your family can reap the benefits in the long run.
