How to Prevent Acne Naturally

You've heard it said—prevention is much better than an ounce, or even a gram, of cure. As such, the best way to avoid having skin blemishes is learning how to prevent acne naturally. Find the steps below:

  1. Keep your face clean. Acne forms when your pores are clogged and bacteria has set in. As such, it's important to cleanse your face with a mild, non-comedogenic facial wash twice a day, so you clear your skin of excess sebum and dead skin cells, keeping it inhospitable for pimple-causing bacteria. Also, never forget to remove makeup thoroughly before going to bed.

  2. Keep your hands, hair, and foreign objects from touching your face. These may introduce bacteria or dirt that could clog and infect your pores. If you must scratch at something on your cheek or forehead, use a tissue or Q-tip to do so. You should also wash your hands before touching your face with your bare fingers, as well as before applying cosmetics or skin care products. Wash your hair regularly and clean your telephone receiver and mobile phone before using them.

Don't forget to wash your makeup applicators regularly, as well.

  3. Change your bed sheets, blankets, and pillow cases often so that these won't introduce anything that may clog your pores or cause infection.

  4. Get at least seven hours of sleep every night, so your skin has enough time to rejuvenate itself. You should also reduce your risk of psychological stress, which can trigger “abnormalities in skin structure and function,” says dermatologist Sonia Badreshia-Bansal. Stress is known to worsen the occurrence of acne.

  5. You should avoid being exposed to high temperatures or direct sunlight. As such, use a wide-brimmed hat, umbrella, or sunscreen when going outdoors on a hot, sunny day. Or, go out at times when the day is cooler. If your work involves working in humid or hot environments, use facial wipes or a mild toner when you feel your face getting oily.

  6. Lessen your sugar intake as high blood glucose levels could trigger increased insulin production, which may cause a hormonal response that triggers the growth of pore-clogging cells and more sebum production.

  7. Drink a lot of water in order to flush out toxins and keep your skin hydrated. That's because being well-hydrated improves blood flow.

  8. Once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin using oatmeal, plant seeds, or skin care products with micro beads that can gently slough off dead skin cells and keep them from clogging your pores. Moisturize afterwards, as this process can be quite drying on your skin.

  9. If you have really oily skin, consider using a lemon-and-cucumber facial mask once or twice a week. You can mix finely grated cucumber with a couple of drops of lemon juice and apply this mixture on your face, leaving it on for about 15 minutes. Then, rinse thoroughly with room temperature water. You can also alternate this with an egg white mask, which firms your skin and helps minimize pore size.

  10. Use cosmetics that are water-based and hypoallergenic. If your skin is oily or combination, consider using those that are infused with acne-fighting ingredients, such as salicylic acid. Steer clear from heavy, cream-based foundations, as they're likely to clog pores. Go for powder-type foundations instead.

  11. Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits that are rich in fiber and nutrients to enhance your skin's health and glow.

Icing your face or washing with ice cold water in the mornings is another way for how to prevent acne naturally, as it also helps minimize pore size, improve skin tone, and keep sebum production in check.
