how to prevent arthritis

Arthritis is inflammation of the joints that causes pain and stiffness. We may not be aware of it, but arthritis starts at an early age – 30 or 40, or even younger. In the most common form, osteoarthritis, cartilage in the knee and joints loses elasticity and wears away. When this is only starting to occur, there’s no pain because cartilage doesn’t have nerve endings. By the time it starts to hurt (when ligaments are over-stretched and bones rub against each other), damage to the cartilage will already be fairly far along. By that time, it will be too late to do anything about it. The good thing is, arthritis can be delayed, or its onset avoided for sometime, if steps are taken while damage has not yet occurred. That’s why it is important to take these steps on how to prevent arthritis.

  1. Watch your diet. This is important for general health and well-being, and it helps much in avoiding early onset of arthritis. A good, balanced diet will not only boost your immune system, it will also help keep your body in good condition.

might also consider discussing vitamins and supplements with your health care provider.

  2. Exercise is imperative, but choose the right regimen. Exercise helps tone your body, strengthen your muscles surrounding your joints, and improves bone density. All these will help your body to avoid cartilage damage. Choose those with low-impact, slow movements and lots of stretches, such as pilates and yoga. If you want to lift weights or do some other strenuous forms of exercise, or prefer sports, make sure you perform the movements correctly to avoid straining your joints and prevent muscle injury. Follow the required breaks and recovery periods to allow your body to heal.

  3. Lose weight, or don’t gain more. Heavy weight is very taxing on joints and the legs. It forces your body to carry more weight than it can effectively handle over a long period. It also makes you susceptible to other diseases, which will minimize or weaken your body’s ability to recover from injuries.

  4. Take care of yourself. Be careful in doing activities or sports that have potential for injury, especially those that cause sprains, stretched muscles, etc. Left untreated, or improperly treated, these can lead to arthritis. This is particularly important because once one part of the body is injured, the rest of the body will compensate for it, usually by another body part taking on the burden. This will have serious effects on muscle and joint wear and tear.

  5. Give up smoking and limit your alcohol intake. Like most advice for overall good health, doing this is necessary to avoid arthritis, as well. These habits weaken bone structure and increase your risk for injury to the joints. Excessive alcohol drinking will put you at risk for accidents, falls and other injuries that could cause sprains and fractures.

There are more than 100 types of arthritis, and sooner or later, it may catch up with us if we live long enough. This is not to say that we can’t take steps to delay it from happening. If we carefully monitor our own health care and responsibly maintain our own well-being, advances in medicine and science may provide relief or means of treatment that will benefit us someday. Nevertheless, even if we don’t get to see such a development in our lifetime, we would at least know how to prevent arthritis and take necessary precautions. It is important to maintain habits that promote a healthy lifestyle, and in so doing, avoid other diseases, as well.
