If there are no known cures for the root of cancer, there are, however, definite preventions. This is easier said than done because we are talking about a complete lifestyle change. Measures to prevent the disease are endless but can be focused mainly in avoiding carcinogens by not eating cancer-causing foods. How to prevent cancer is very doable. We just have to be knowledgeable about what causes it and have the discipline not to indulge in them. Here are some of the suggestions for prevention:

  1. Cut the risk factors by simply not exposing oneself to the risks of acquiring cancer. Idleness, being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, smoking, acquiring sexually transmitted diseases, using exogenous hormones, exposure to ionizing and ultraviolet radiation, and other chemical exposures are some of the major habits leading to cancer. Lung cancer and mesothelioma are mainly caused by tobacco smoke whereas leukemia has been traced back to benzene exposure particularly from industrial facilities.

  2. Watch what you eat and drink.

    Too much meat can cause colon cancer. Liver cancer has been traced back from unregulated loads of coffee. Benzopyrene, carcinogens that can cause cancer, are found in foods processed at high heat such as grilled meat. Colon, breast, and pancreatic cancers are more likely the results of the habitual consumption of these kinds of foods. Instead of fatty gastronomies, add mushrooms to your diet because they have anti-cancer effects and the ability to regulate the immune system.

  3. Get your vitamins from fresh sources rather than from formulated supplements. Unprocessed foods and vegetables have maximum health benefits compared to preserved, frozen, or canned products. Cancer like some diseases is also triggered by vitamin deficiencies such as pernicious anemia. Beta carotene from vegetables like carrots is known to have protective effects against the disease. Melanoma, on the other hand, is a condition due to a lack of Vitamin D from the sun.

  4. If you belong to the high-risk group, consult your doctor regarding chemoprevention. Taking Tamoxifen, a selective estrogen receptor modulator, on a daily basis for 5 years will reduce the risk of breast cancer to 50 per cent for women. Raloxifene is another drug like Tamoxifen but with fewer side effects. COX-2 inhibitors are also recommended for people who are at risk of contracting colon cancer.

  5. Submit yourself for genetic testing if you belong to the high-risk group. Carriers of genetic mutations can be monitored closely by doctors. They may be recommended to undergo chemoprevention or the appropriate preventive surgery depending on the kind of cancer that they are more likely to develop because of hereditary connections. This is very effective because if the hereditary genes are detected early, intervention can start immediately.

  6. Avail yourself of anti-cancer vaccinations. Prophylactic vaccines will prevent oncogenic infections. Preventive Human Papillomavirus vaccines are available to reduce the risk for cancers due to sexually transmitted disease strains. Gardasil and Cervarix are vaccines against cervical cancer.

How to prevent cancer will be more specific when you undergo cancer screening.  Start performing breast self-examinations manually and proceed to mammograms if unusual bumps, dents, or discharges are found. Check for colorectal cancer by having a colonoscopy and occult blood testing. A digital rectal examination can test for prostate cancer. A Pap smear laboratory culture can screen for cervical cancer, and random chest X-rays can detect lung cancer for smokers. If you are worried that you may be prone to cancer based on your family and medical history, do not delay in screening yourself for early detection and peace of mind.
