How to Prevent Razor Burn on Bikini Area

A trip to the beach or a skimpy outfit calls for a thorough de-fuzzing. However, there are challenges in doing just that. One of them is skin redness and irritation caused by the improper use of a blade, otherwise known as a razor burn. This typically happens when you shave off too much of the dermal (top skin) layers, resulting in reddening and some degree of inflammation. To learn how to prevent razor burn on bikini area and prevent embarrassing red spots, take a look at these tips:

  1. First, you need to do some pre-shaving preparations. If you rush or do things haphazardly, razor burns happen. So make sure you are careful and take the time to prepare. The basic rule is that you should never shave dry and cold.

  2. Trim the area with sanitized scissors or electric trimmers until the hair is just about a quarter of an inch long.

  3. Wet or moisten the area. This is because hair becomes weaker and softer after it has absorbed water. The best time to do a bikini shave is right after showering or taking a bath.



    Then, exfoliate with a loofah or the usual product that you use to make the shaving process go smoothly. If that's not possible, you can just wet the area with a slightly warm, moist towel for a couple of minutes and exfoliate gently.

  4. Apply shaving gel on the area. You can use cream, but gels let you see your progress and you're less likely to get clogged pores. The unscented and moisturizing kind is ideal, as the skin around the bikini line tends to be sensitive. To be sure, test the product on a small area to see whether your skin can handle it.

  5. Use a new multi-blade razor so you're sure it's still sharp. Dull blades pull at your skin and even cause some tearing, instead of cutting hair. You should change the blade after three to five shaves or when it starts to get dull. Make sure you rinse and dry it well before storing if you plan to reuse the razor.

  6. Put your hand on your body just above your bikini line and pull it upward to make your skin is smooth and taut. Then shave the area using a slow, even downward stroke, following the direction of your hair growth. Don't press the wet razor down; instead, just let the blades do their job. Aim to shave the area cleanly in one pass. You can repeat but not too many times because the risk of getting a razor burn is higher with each pass, as more skin is removed.

  7. Dip your razor in a bowl of water or run it under the tap if it gets clogged with cut hair in between shaves.

  8. Once you're done, exfoliate the shaved area once more. This helps remove excess dead skin and aligns your hair follicles, thereby preventing ingrown hairs. You can do a sugar scrub to soothe your skin.

  9. Pat the area dry. Rubbing irritates your skin, so avoid creating friction on freshly shaved skin. Then, apply an unscented, hypoallergenic moisturizer appropriate for this sensitive body part. You can also use baby oil or aloe vera as alternatives. You can finish off with a light dusting of baby powder to reduce irritation, making sure it doesn't get into your vagina.

Lastly, a crucial part of how to prevent razor burn on bikini area is avoiding tight undergarments and jeans a day or two after shaving so you don't irritate your skin. Do not shave your bikini line often; allow at least a couple of days in between so that your skin has time to recover.
