How to Prevent Wrinkles

How to Prevent Wrinkles

As you become older, your skin becomes more prone to wrinkles because it naturally loses moisture and elasticity. However, this does not mean that you have to just accept getting wrinkles and rely on makeup to cover them up. It also does not mean that you have to subject yourself to many expensive treatments just to get rid of wrinkles. On the contrary, there are several things that you can do in order to prevent wrinkles. Here are some tips that might come in handy on how to prevent wrinkles:

  1. Protect your skin from the sun. A lot of studies have pointed to ultraviolet ray exposure as the number one cause of wrinkles, not to mention one of the leading causes of skin cancer. Although it is important to remember that the sun is beneficial to the skin in moderate amounts as it is important for the body’s production of vitamin D, prolonged exposure can lead to skin problems. If you can’t stay away from the sun, you can at least wear sunscreen or sunblock. Moisturize daily with an SPF30 sunscreen and do not forget to retouch after two hours or so.

  2. Wash and exfoliate your skin. Washing your face and exfoliating every once in a while can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Use a mild soap with moisturizer. However, do not overly wash your face as that can strip your skin of its natural oil and moisture. Once or twice a day is enough. In addition, use natural facial cleansers to avoid the side effects of commercial chemicals on your skin.

  3. Control facial expressions. If you notice, the first wrinkles that appear on your face result from repeated facial expressions, such as laugh lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead folds. It might be difficult to control your facial expressions, but you might want to be careful about squinting, raising your eyebrows, or frowning. However, do not be afraid to laugh or smile since joy and positivity can have positive health benefits.

  4. Stop drinking and smoking. Alcohol can dehydrate your body and skin, thereby contributing to the development of wrinkles. Whenever you have a hangover and are trying to sleep off your drunkenness, water collects in your soft tissues and makes your face puffy. This becomes a good avenue for wrinkles to form. As for smoking, cigarettes can reduce the nitric oxide in your arteries, which is responsible for making your skin flexible. Because of this lack of flexibility, your skin becomes more prone to wrinkles.

  5. Sleep on your back. As you age, the connective tissue on your face becomes less flexible and resilient. If you keep on sleeping on the same side of your face every night, chances are your skin gets repeatedly pushed against the pillow, and it won’t smooth out as quickly as it did when you were younger. The best thing to do is to sleep on your back or at least vary your sleeping position every night. In addition, getting adequate rest and sleep is important in keeping your skin healthy and wrinkle-free.

Remember that knowing how to prevent wrinkles can help your skin look younger even as you age. Do not forget to always protect your skin from the sun and wash it twice a day. Maintain a healthy lifestyle through proper sleep, diet and exercise, as well as quitting drinking and smoking. In addition, watch out for negative facial expressions and just keep on being happy.
