  2. Drink a lot of water. Properly hydrated skin just looks more healthy and radiant; you may not notice any effects right away, but be consistent about consuming at least eight glasses of water per day (soda, tea, and other beverages do not count), especially during warm weather when your body tends to lose more water through sweat. To know if you are indeed drinking as much water as you need, check your urine; it should be almost clear. The darker the yellow, the more water you need.

  3. Wear sunscreen every day, even if you are only staying indoors. Every time you are exposed to UV rays, you sustain skin damage. Eventually, it all adds up and causes wrinkles and age spots. Sunlight is the major source of UV rays in the atmosphere, but most people don’t realize that even artificial lighting and electronic monitors also emit UV rays.

  4. Eat the right kind of fats—omega-3 fatty acids, that is. Omega-3 fatty acids provide nourishment to the skin and help it to maintain its tone. It is also an essential nutrient that enables the skin glands to produce enough sebum to moisturize and protect the surface of the skin. To ensure that you have adequate levels of omega-3 in your body, consume more fish (especially cold water fish like tuna and salmon), soy, nuts, and pumpkin seeds.

  5. Eat for collagen. Collagen is a protein that gives the skin strength and firmness; after the age of 30, the body’s ability to produce and retain collagen steadily decreases, so wrinkles and fine lines appear. Eating foods that are high in vitamin C and other antioxidants such as fruits, berries, and nuts can help boost the body’s collagen levels.

Aside from following the tips above, knowing how to prevent wrinkles naturally also includes handling the skin as gently as possible. Avoid overly abrasive scrubs or sponges because they can cause minute tears in the epidermis. Also, moisturize the skin every night after cleansing. Invest in a good makeup remover that can emulsify even waterproof eyeliners and mascara. Even simple habits like using scrubbing motions to remove mascara and other eye makeup can take their toll because the skin around the eyes is very thin and delicate. Instead of rubbing the eye area to take off makeup, moisten a cotton round with makeup remover and hold it to the eye for about 30 seconds, then lightly wipe off. Common sense and good habits are the keys to looking young and healthy for as long as possible. When you take the time to take care of yourself, others will notice.
