How to Properly Care for Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

As excessive oil production tends to lead to clogged and enlarged pores, blackheads, and breakouts, many people with very active oil glands often deal with various skin issues. Oily skin, however, does not have to mean ugly skin. Knowing how to properly care for oily, acne-prone skin is the key to getting a beautifully clear face. The good news is that you don’t need pricey dermatological or high-end skin care products; all it takes is warm water and a custom cocktail of organic oils.

Contrary to what many might think, oil is not the enemy of beautiful skin; in fact, natural oils, such as jojoba, sunflower, and almond oil, can actually keep clogged pores and irritated skin at bay. All too often however, people with oily, acne-prone skin bombard breakouts with harsh products that strip the skin of precious oil, thereby causing it to produce even more oil to compensate. The excessive oil can lead to skin issues, including acne, and so the cycle goes on and on. Find out how to rescue your skin using the oil cleaning method below.

  1. The oil cleansing method is intended to replace cleansers or soaps.

    It involves using natural oils to dissolve and lift the dirty oil that has accumulated on your face during the day in order to take with it dead skin cells, dust, grime so that they don’t clog your pores. It is based on the principle that like dissolves like, much in the same way that white wine removes red wine stains. What makes this method so good for acne-prone skin is that it does not require hard scrubbing, which actually aggravates the skin, yet it is so effective that you don’t even need to use a makeup remover beforehand as you do with foaming cleansers or soap.

  2. Castor oil, which boasts antibacterial properties, is the main ingredient of the cleansing oil. Since it is very drying on its own, you need to dilute it in a moisturizing carrier oil. Some of the best choices for acne-prone oily skin are jojoba, sweet almond, and sunflower. Avoid coconut and olive oil, as they tend to clog pores.

  3. Combine two parts of castor oil with one part carrier oil. Mix just enough for several days’ use; you can adjust the proportion if needed, depending on how your skin feels afterward. Add more carrier oil if it feels too dry.

  4. Rinse your face with warm water, and apply some of the cleansing oil. Massage it into your skin using light upward strokes. Though you don’t need to take off your makeup, you may want to use a paper towel to wipe it off as it dissolves to avoid getting your face towel too dirty later on. Make sure to generously cover your skin, but it should not be dripping.

  5. Let the oil sit for about 30 seconds or so. Dunk the washcloth in warm water (as hot as you can stand), and wipe off the oil. Rinse the washcloth and repeat until all the oil is gone. You’ll find your skin feeling clean, soft, and smooth. Follow up with your regular toning and moisturizing routine as usual.
