How to Properly Shave Pubic Hair

How to Properly Shave Pubic Hair

A lot of people spend time and money trying to keep their legs, armpits, and other visible parts of the body hair-free, but they shy away when it comes to shaving pubic hair. In reality, shaving one's pubic hair is as safe as shaving hair from other parts of the body. However, the crotch area is more sensitive than any other hairy part of the body, so extra care is needed. Skin irritation is also common among pubic area shavers, so it is important to practice the proper technique to avoid any ingrown hairs and red bumps in the process. Here are the steps on how to properly shave pubic hair:

  1. Trim your pubic hair. Before beginning the shaving process, you first have to trim your pubic hair, especially if it is long. Razors are designed to be used on short hair, so shaving long hair can result in a clogged and dull razor. Use scissors to trim your hair prior to shaving. Gently pull your hair away from the body and cut the hair with sharp scissors. If you have safety guards, use them. Your hair should be trimmed to about ¼ inch long before you start shaving.

  2. Prepare your pubic area for shaving. Taking a hot bath or shower can help soften your hair follicles down there, thus making it easier to shave them. You may also exfoliate the area if you have time since exfoliation aligns your pubic hair outwards while also stripping away dead skin, allowing for a closer shave. Remember also to use a shaving cream specially designed for pubic hair to avoid irritation during and after shaving.

  3. Pull your skin tight and start shaving gently. Use a brand new razor or blade in shaving your pubic hair as it is safer and easier on your skin. Using your free hand, pull your skin taut prior to shaving because loose skin only invites injury. Start shaving from below the navel going south. You have two options—you can either shave with the grain to prevent irritation, or shave against the grain to get a closer shave. The first option is recommended for very sensitive skin. Avoid over-shaving because this will only lead to inflamed skin. Do not forget your butt area since there is also hair growing there. You can strategically place a hand mirror to assist you in making sure you don’t miss anything.

  4. Use tweezers to pluck stray hairs. Even if you are an expert in shaving pubic hair, it is downright impossible to get all the hair during shaving. Use tweezers to get any stray hairs that you missed while you were shaving. This is going to sting, but it will only last a matter of seconds.

  5. Do not forget the shaving aftercare. Shaving your pubic hair does not stop right after the shaving process. You also have to ensure that your skin will not get irritated afterwards. You can minimize irritation by exfoliating your skin, which removes all the dead skin cells that might cause your future pubic hair to become ingrown. You may use a sugar scrub to exfoliate right after washing the area with mild soap and clean water. If you do not have a sugar scrub, baking soda is a good alternative. You should also apply moisturizers, such as baby oil and aloe vera, designed for sensitive skin. Avoid scented moisturizers, since they contain fragrances that might irritate your newly-shaven area. You can also powder the area to reduce bumpiness and irritation, but ladies should be careful of getting powder in their genital areas.

Keep in mind that learning how to properly shave pubic hair is not an instant process. Expect that it will take you a long time on your first try, but you will eventually get faster and better with practice. Just make sure not to shave for days in a row since this will cause skin irritation.
