How to Regrow Hair in Thinning Areas

Thinning hair can be a cause of anxiety for anyone. Though hair loss may be more common in men, many women also experience it, especially in the later adult years or even earlier. Thinning hair may have a variety of causes, such as stress or underlying conditions like thyroid problems or scalp infections. Whatever the cause, this article can help you learn how to regrow hair in thinning areas.

  1. See your doctor to identify the cause of your hair thinning. Knowing why means you and your doctor can determine the best treatment. One common cause is hormonal fluctuations wherein sex hormones cause hair to fall out. Another common cause is an underlying medical condition, such as a scalp infection, a thyroid condition, or even alopecia areata, an immune disorder that leads to the destruction of hair follicles.

  2. Consider nutritional oil treatments. Massaging your scalp daily with coconut or almond oil can stimulate hair growth. The oils, together with the massaging action, increases blood flow and circulation in your scalp.

This can in turn stimulate your hair follicles and encourages hair growth. You can do this daily in the shower or before going to bed at night. When massaging your scalp, trace your finger in circular motions, starting just above the forehead and working toward the sides and back of your head while paying more attention to thinning or balding areas.

  3. Consider a shampoo or cream that contains minoxidil as an active component. Minoxidil is just one of two FDA-approved drugs for treating hair loss and hair thinning. Originally intended as a pill to treat hypertension, researchers found that human subjects who took the drug experienced increased hair growth on various areas of their body. Today, the drug is available in various forms that you can directly apply on the scalp, including hair creams, solutions, shampoos and foams. It may take up to 10 weeks to have a noticeable effect, so be patient. It is marketed under brand names like Rogaine and Ioniten.

  4. Ask your doctor if you can take finasteride. Marketed under the brand name Propecia, it is the second drug approved by the FDA to treat hair loss. Studies have shown that it works for male pattern baldness, a condition in which dihydrotestosterone (DHT) shrinks the hair follicles. Finasteride prevents the production of DHT to keep hair follicles intact. It comes in tablet form, but only male patients should take it.

  5. Enrich your diet and take supplements good for hair growth. Hair is made up of protein, so see to it that your diet contains enough protein sources like eggs, meat, nuts and legumes. Omega-3 fatty acids also improve hair health and are found in foods like salmon, sardines and other fish; avocados; vegetable oils like flaxseed and canola; walnuts; and greens like kale and spinach. Additionally, biotin supplements may also be a good idea, as it is known to be responsible for healthy skin, hair and nails. Up your biotin intake with supplements or diet changes to biotin-rich food like meat products, liver, and green, leafy vegetables.

  6. Lastly, avoid stress. Chronic stress is a common cause of thinning hair. If you have a stressful lifestyle or job, try to set aside some time every day to relax and calm yourself. Meditation, calming teas, or simply getting more sleep can lessen your stress levels and possibly allow your hair chance to recuperate and regrow.

Though these tips aren’t quick fixes, this guide on how to regrow hair in thinning areas can help you determine which approach is best for you, keep your remaining hair healthy, and encourage hair growth.
