how to relieve arthritis pain

Arthritis is hard to live with but not impossible. Joint pains, difficulty moving, and the depression that comes with being sick can all take its toll and increase the likelihood of you getting worse. Sometimes, just having any pain at all can trigger a whole new set of problems. But arthritis doesn’t have to control your life. Before an attack, have a plan of action to offset, minimize, or manage the pain that arthritis brings. And when it does come, be prepared to deal with it by knowing how to relieve arthritis pain.

  1. Understand your condition. Sometimes, just knowing about your illness can give you valuable information about what to avoid, how to manage it, and how to relieve pain due to it. The best source is your doctor. Be open about all that you’re going through health-wise because other symptoms might manifest that you wouldn’t think to connect with arthritis. You also need to talk about other conditions you might have so that your overall health is taken into consideration when managing your ailment.

  2. Take over the counter medication. Aspirin is very helpful for relieving arthritis pain, is easy to obtain, and relatively cheap. It has also been proven to be effective against arthritis. However, before taking this or any medication, consult a physician first and carefully follow his or her instructions regarding dosage. Your doctor may also prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication to address the inflammation of the joints, which is the main cause of arthritis pain.

  3. If the above doesn't work, take prescription medication. Ask your doctor for a prescription if over the counter medication doesn’t alleviate the pain. Some people find relief in topical ointments or the application of herbal preparations, but only do so with your doctor’s approval. For prescription medications, follow your doctor’s instruction and do not self- or over-medicate. It is also not advisable to suffer prolonged pain. If your medication does not provide enough relief, consult your doctor before your condition gets worse.

  4. Get moving. Have a regular form of low-impact exercise that will get you sweating and lift your spirits. Choose the right kind of exercise, though; avoid those that tax your joints and require quick or repetitive movements in rapid intervals. Develop flexibility and enhance your range of motion. Exercise gives you the added advantage of helping control your weight or bringing it down; excess weight is hard on your joints and can worsen arthritis. What’s more, regular movement will help keep your joints limber and stable and stop your muscles from atrophying.

  5. Try ice packs or a warm bath. Everybody is different, so what works for one person may not work for another. Find out which one suits you best.

  6. Work on something you love, as long as it does not stress your body and joints. Some people like to do volunteer work, some like to do pottery, some garden, and some scrapbook. Aside from being productive, it will give you opportunities to stay active and effectively distract you from being depressed, worried, or worn down by your ailment.

There are other things you need to do if you are serious about figuring out how to relieve arthritis pain and lessening the effect of arthritis on your life. Although they do not relieve the pain caused by arthritis, they can help you in keeping the pain at bay. Some include staying away from stress, making necessary and healthy lifestyle changes, such as giving up smoking and choosing a healthy diet, and avoiding your own particular arthritis triggers. These may require a huge sacrifice from you. But if practicing those helps you to relieve arthritis pain, then it should be worth it.
