How to Relieve Nasal Congestion

How to Relieve Nasal Congestion

Those suffering from nasal allergies, acute sinusitis, rhinitis and other nose related ailments should know how to relieve nasal congestion by heart. Difficulty breathing is caused by the inflammation of the nasal passages due to outside factors that trigger allergic reactions. To find a sigh of relief, you need decongestants in the form of tablets, nasal sprays or even natural remedies. Whether you have nasal allergies or any nose-related problem, nasal obstruction is the common denominator to all of them. The following steps will help you address sudden nasal clogging.

  1. Consult a specialist. Not every medical doctor can diagnose and treat a nasal problem. A physician that specializes in ear, nose and throat (ENT) issues is the right person to seek. If your nasal congestion is not caused by common colds and cough, consult a specialist for proper treatment.

  2. Take your prescribed medications. Anti-histamines and decongestants are good medications for nasal congestions.

The anti-histamine will relieve you of allergic reactions if allergens are the source of your problem. On the other hand, decongestants will relax your swollen nasal passages, thereby allowing you to breathe normally again.

Do not just take any medication carelessly. Always follow the prescription of your doctor.

  3. Use your nasal spray. Nasal sprays contain anti-histamines and sometimes they are combined with decongestants. There are also nasal sprays that are formulated and packed for decongestion purposes only. Whatever may be the nature of the nasal spray you have, if your ENT prescribed it, then it will give you relief. Apply the recommended number of sprays.

  4. Take anti-histamines. Nasal obstruction is the result of allergic reactions in your body. When allergic reactions lead to a clogged nose, then it is time for you to take your anti-histamine. This medicine provides long-lasting relief although it may not work immediately after ingestion.

  5. Try inhaling steam. The process of steam inhalation is widely used because it is a natural remedy to decongest a stuffy nose. Mix hot water and salt in a small basin. Stir the mixture to have a saline solution. Bow your head on the basin and secure your entire head with a towel. Make sure to cover the basin as well to keep the vapors locked, and then proceed to inhale the water vapors. At most, the saline solution will relieve your inflamed nasal passages.

You can also add Eucalyptus oil or tea tree oil to the mixture. Just repeat the process in the preceding paragraph.

  6. Use vapor rub. This can provide immediate but temporary relief from nasal congestion. Rub small amounts of vapor rub in your nostrils. Apply it slowly to avoid nostril irritation. The vapor rub will slowly melt down the mucus and the nasal passages will clear in a matter of seconds.

  7. Use garlic cloves. Garlic cloves are a natural way to relieve nasal problems. Thinly slice the garlic cloves and put one slice on every nostril. Wait for 10 to 15 minutes for your nostrils to decongest. The smell may not be desirable but the relief is worth it.

  8. Eat while you feel relieved. Hot salsa or cayenne peppers are good for nasal congestion. In particular, cayenne pepper has an element called capsaicin, which equally works like guaifenesin in terms of expectorating phlegm coming from congested nasal passages and airways. You can also eat sushi. The wasabi paste is very hot and can relieve your congested nose in seconds.

Nasal congestion can affect your efficiency level when you are at work or in school. It will really put you down and the uneasiness may seem unbearable. Once the nose membrane is clogged, a serious headache and watery eyes won’t be too far behind. The discomfort it gives you is very exhausting. You can use medication or natural cures to deal with nasal congestion. You must decide for yourself which remedy is best for your situation. The above steps give you flexibility in every situation, providing you with various strategies on how to relieve nasal congestion.
