How to Relieve Pain from Sunburn

While sunbathing is a relaxing and fun activity, getting a sunburn isn’t. In fact, sunburns are very painful. The best thing to do before trying to get a tan under the sun is to prevent sunburn, but not everyone wants to step off the beach every two hours just to put on more sunscreen. Since sunburns are common, here are some ways on how to relieve pain from sunburn:

  1. Take a cool bath. A cool bath can help ease the pain and prevent your skin from becoming irritated. Set the water temperature to a little below lukewarm and have the water run on your sunburned skin for 10-20 minutes. If you are using a shower, make sure that the water is gently hitting your skin to avoid further irritating the affected area. You may add baking soda to your bath and soak for 15-20 minutes for a soothing effect. Another alternative is oatmeal. Just add ½ to 1 cup of oatmeal to your bath to relieve pain. When drying your skin, don’t rub yourself with a towel. Just pat yourself dry.

  2. Apply aloe vera. Aloe vera is a classic remedy for sunburn.

    e juice of the aloe vera plant can help relieve the pain from sunburn and reduce redness, since it causes your blood vessels to constrict. If you don’t have access to an aloe vera plant, you can find lotions and gels containing aloe vera in grocery stores and supermarkets. Choose ones without added fragrance or color, since the chemicals used in these gels might further irritate your skin.

  3. Apply a cool compress. Simply get a washcloth and soak it in cool water, then apply it directly on the affected skin. Do not use an ice pack because this might further burn the skin. Lay the cool compress on the sunburned area for 20-30 minutes to soothe the pain. You may keep rewetting the cloth as often as you want, and apply the compress several times per day as needed to relieve the pain.

  4. Put tea bags or tea on affected area. Using black tea can help soothe the pain and even hasten the healing process. Aside from black tea, you can also try comfrey, calendula, and mint tea bags since they all have cooling and pain-relieving properties. Simply brew 3-4 teabags in warm water, then remove the tea bags, and let the water cool to room temperature. Soak a washcloth in the tea and dab the cloth on the sunburned area. You may also dab the teabags directly on the affected area. Do not rinse it off immediately and leave it for a few hours, preferably overnight. Rinse the area in the shower first thing in the morning.

  5. Use potatoes. Potatoes are known as great pain relievers all over the world. Simply wash two potatoes, cut them into chunks, and grind them in the blender or food processor until they are in liquid form. You can add water if the potatoes are too dry. Apply the ground potato on the sunburned area, and then let the potatoes dry before taking a shower. You may also apply the potatoes on a gauze and wrap this on your sunburn, making sure to change the dressing every hour.

  6. Try using vinegar. Vinegar is a popular folk remedy for relieving pain from sunburn. Take note, however, that this should be done on intact skin, not on skin with ruptures or abrasions. It is best to use apple cider or white vinegar. Simply mix 50 percent vinegar and 50 percent cool water, then soak a towel into the mixture and press it on the sunburned area.

There are many ways on how to relieve pain from sunburn. However, it is still best to prevent sunburn from happening by applying sunscreen before going out into the sun and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
