How to Remove Age Spots on Face

Years of sun exposure can lead to the formation of age spots because the constant acceleration of melanin production can make melanin clump and turn into an unevenly colored patch of skin. However, if you have a genetic susceptibility to developing age spots, you're likely to have them even if you're not as exposed to the sun in your younger years. It is possible, though, that you may get fewer of these spots due to your good skin care habits. So, once you have them, it is good to know how to remove age spots on face. Take a look at these pointers to find out how:

  1. You can go for the camouflage option, where you use makeup to conceal liver spots. M.A.C. makeup artist Gregory Arit recommends using peach-toned concealers that will help cancel out the brown shade of the blemishes. Apply the concealer sparingly on the affected areas before you apply foundation.

  2. If you want to heal your skin of those age spots, you can do spot-treatment with products containing hydroquinone (HQ). Mount Sinai Medical Center dermatology Chief Dr.

Ellen Marmur says that this substance is the only ingredient approved by the FDA for bleaching pigmentation. Persevere with this treatment for about four to eight months, or even a year, which is the time it usually takes to make the spots fade. Once they do, you can stop applying the HQ. However, while you're still using this treatment, you need to keep using broad-spectrum sunblock on your face and other affected areas so that you preserve the effects of the HQ.

  3. Hydroquinone treatment may be complemented with retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A. However, age spots can also be treated with retinoids alone. Be aware that these treatments can cause some temporary burning, redness, itching, or dryness to reveal a new layer of skin.

  4. Another alternative is dermabrasion, which involves sanding the outermost layers of your epidermis, so the new layer grows. This enables you to have smoother skin that is also spot-free.

  5. Laser therapy helps destroy melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, without negatively affecting your skin's outer layer. However, this kind of option involves several visits and takes several weeks before you can see some results.

  6. A chemical peel is another effective alternative as it gives you a similar result as dermabrasion. Instead of a rapidly rotating brush, a chemical solution is used to bring about the skin rejuvenation. However, this procedure also requires multiple sessions before you can see some results.

  7. Cryotherapy, or freezing, can help eliminate those brownish spots. This process involves putting a freezing agent, like liquid nitrogen, on the age spots to destroy the excess pigment. As the affected areas heal, your skin may start looking lighter.

  8. A common home remedy is applying freshly squeezed lemon juice on the spots and leaving it on for about 30 minutes before washing it off. Don't expect the effect to occur overnight—you may have to wait as long as two months before the effects become more obvious.

  9. Another natural remedy you can try is apple cider vinegar. Put some on the liver spots and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing the substance off. See to it that you use this once a day only because vinegar is very drying for the skin. You can also add some onion juice to boost its benefit.

An essential aspect of how to remove age spots on face is the application of sunblock. All these interventions require UV protection as they involve the growth of a new layer of skin, which is very sensitive and susceptible to sun damage. This is why it is important to wear sunblock—to avoid reversing the effect of the treatments mentioned.
