How to Remove Color from Hair

It is nice to color your hair differently from its natural color every now and then. It is like getting to reinvent your whole personality. But what if the coloring process gets a little bit out of hand and you are not happy with the results? Should you just accept that it will be a bad hair year for you? Fret not because, fortunately, you can learn how to remove color from hair. Here are some guidelines on what you should do if you don’t like your new hair color:

  1. It is easy to get rid of your new hair color if you had it done in a salon. Before you leave the salon where you dyed your hair, tell your hairstylist that you are not happy with your new hair color. She might do a color correction at no cost to you.

  2. If your new hair color is lighter than your natural hair color, you can color your hair again with a darker shade to mask it.

  3. You can use a laundry detergent to remove the hair color. Make sure that you use a detergent that does not contain bleach.

Rather, use one that would normally be used to wash colored items. Apply a small amount of detergent in the shower, and then thoroughly rinse it off so as to avoid hair damage. Repeat this step several times to get rid of the hair dye.

  4. You can also use a paste of powdered Vitamin C tablets and water to remove semi-permanent, dark hair dye. Apply this paste to your damp hair and let it sit for an hour before rinsing. This is best done within a few days of getting your hair dyed. It is a relatively safe method, so there is no need to recolor your hair.

  5. You can use an anti-dandruff shampoo as well. Mix the shampoo with baking soda then apply it to your wet hair. Rinse and then repeat the process to get all of the hair color out.

  6. Buy a hair color remover. You can easily find trustworthy brands like L’Oreal at drugstores or salons. Do not forget to follow all the instructions carefully.

  7. If you want to achieve a beach blonde color, you may bleach your hair. You can do so by asking a professional hair colorist to do the job for you. Alternatively, you can do it yourself using bleaching agents from a drugstore.

  8. Mixing dish soap with your regular shampoo can also remove hair color. You should use this the same way you would wash your hair with shampoo. But make sure you thoroughly rinse it off to avoid drying your hair. Also, apply only a small amount of dish soap, around 3 to 4 drops, every time you wash your hair with it. Repeat as necessary.

  9. Getting a hot oil treatment can also be an effective way to remove hair color. It will help fade the color of your hair. Moreover, it is ideal for deep conditioning action. Remember that a hot oil treatment should be done only once a week to avoid damaging your hair.

To avoid all the hassle of removing unwanted hair color, you should try using semi-permanent hair color first. It has a lifespan of 4-6 weeks. In the worst-case scenario, though, knowing how to remove color from hair will come in handy.
