How to Remove Deep Acne Scars

How to Remove Deep Acne Scars

There is a good amount of information available about how to remove deep acne scars. Your options may only be limited by your preferred approach (natural, over the counter, surgery, etc.), your budget, your age, or the severity of the problem. If you want to explore options open to you, read on.

  1. All natural home remedies. There are people who swear by home remedies to get rid of slight acne scars. These include exfoliants, such as a paste made of baking soda and water; honey and ground cinnamon mixture; a sugar scrub made of olive oil and sugar; a little salt and water; oatmeal and water; and a sponge or loofah. You can also try applying the lemon juice, which is a natural bleaching ingredient, to lighten the skin somewhat and minimize the appearance of the scar. When applying lemon juice, use it only on scars, not on open wounds as it can really sting. If the scar is new, try applying aloe vera morning and evening to help the skin heal better and minimize the severity of the scar.

  2. Over the counter remedies.

There are many non-prescription options available to get rid of acne scars. These include tea tree oil, cortisone, Vitamin C, kojic or azelaic or salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, low-dose hydroquinone, and tretinoin creams, plus a host of other cosmetic products that help scars fade and lighten the skin. When used regularly over a certain period of time, they can help remove scars or make them disappear. But they mostly work for scars that are not very deep and on people with a lighter complexion. Also, the skin’s response varies from person to person; every individual’s skin is slightly different from that of others’ and thus may respond differently to treatment.

  3. Prescription medication. Light scar removal may occur quicker. For this you need to see a doctor who can best prescribe the right medication and dosage for your particular condition. The following medications or a combination may be prescribed: tretinoin, isotretinoin, benzoyl peroxide, tazarotene. These medications—particularly isotretinoin—have severe side effects and must be monitored closely for your own protection. When given this treatment, carefully follow the doctor’s instructions.

  4. Cosmetic procedures. Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are treatments for the surface of the skin to remove the outer layers and scars. With chemical peels, chemicals that cause the outer layer to peel off are applied to the skin. Microdermabrasion, also known as particle resurfacing or derma-peel, is where the outermost surface of the skin is buffed with grains or crystals through the use of a wand. Both procedures are not without risks.

  5. Cosmetic surgery. This is a more advanced procedure to treat deep-set scars that cannot be removed by other treatments. It treats the skin at a much deeper level than cosmetic procedures, is more effective for severe scars, but also more expensive and riskier. A tissue filling procedure is where collagen or fat is injected under the skin to even out the skin’s surface and thus remove the appearance of scars. Dermabrasion uses a diamond wheel, while laser resurfacing uses a laser beam, and both these procedures remove the top layers of the skin and induce new skin growth. With punch grafts, the scarred skin is removed and replaced with smooth skin from elsewhere on the body; however, though this procedure removes acne scars, it creates another scarring problem of its own due to the skin grafts. In any case, these procedures are riskier than the others and must be carefully considered.

Being thus better informed, you should be better equipped to choose a solution to your problem of how to remove deep acne scars.
