How to Repair Damaged Curly Hair

Curly hair is very beautiful, but if you don’t know how to properly take care of it, you run the risk of damaging it. The fact is that curly hair is more prone to dryness and damage than straight hair, and it is a lot easier to damage your hair than it is to repair it. You apply a lot of products to your curly hair over the years, and before long, you are left with extremely damaged and dry hair. Instead of deciding to chop your locks, there are still things that you can do about how to repair damaged curly hair. Follow these tips to help your curly hair get back to its original, gorgeous state:

  1. Wash your hair. It is important to keep your hair clean in order to remove all the dirt and dust that has accumulated in it. However, you should avoid shampooing your hair too much, as it can dry your hair. At the very least, you should wash your hair three or four times a week, if not every day. The shampoo that you use should be sulfate-free and alcohol-free since these ingredients can dry your hair. You should also condition your hair and scalp every time you wash it.

Leave the conditioner on your scalp for a minute or two before rinsing it.

  2. Avoid subjecting your hair to heat. If you are not going out, then avoid blow drying or ironing your hair. Just leave your hair to air dry. While still wet, you can detangle your hair using a wide-toothed comb or your fingers. Similarly, you should also protect your hair against the sun by wearing a hat or scarf whenever you go out. You can also apply a sunscreen agent on your hair.

  3. Deeply condition your hair periodically. Deep conditioning protein treatments can help rebuild the natural keratin component of your hair, thus making your hair smoother and shinier. It will also rehydrate your hair and help it retain moisture for longer periods of time, which is what damaged curly hair needs. You don’t have to buy these deep conditioning treatments from the salon since you can make one yourself using aloe vera and coconut oil. Apply the treatment to wet hair and leave it on for a couple of hours or even overnight for best results.

  4. Prevent your hair from tangling. Tangles in damaged curly hair are particularly hard to manage. If you love using hair accessories, you can do so, but avoid those that get easily tangled in your hair, like small hair clips and rubber bands. You can choose to wear your hair in braids or buns so that it does not get tangled. You can do this even while you sleep so that your hair is not so tangled when you wake up.

  5. Avoid over-processing your hair. If your curly hair is already damaged, it will do no good to continue to bleach or color your hair regularly. This will only lead to further damage that might make you want to just get rid of your hair altogether. What you can do is to avoid these kinds of hair treatments while you are trying to restore the moisture in your hair. Once your hair is back to its healthy state, then maybe you can go back to coloring your hair as desired.

No matter how damaged your curly locks are, there is always a solution for how to repair damaged curly hair. Just make sure that you do not inflict further damage on your hair and that you continue to hydrate and condition it in order to keep it healthy and shiny.
