How to Repair Dry, Damaged Hair

Lustrous and healthy hair can become dry and damaged due to hair treatments, such as bleaching, dyeing, and curling.  Frequent swimming in a chlorinated pool is another cause of dry, damaged hair.  Below are tips on how to repair dry, damaged hair and help it become healthy and shiny again.

  1. Prevent weather damage

    Just as the sun can damage the skin and cause sunburn, the sun can damage the hair too. Too much sun exposure dries out the hair, contributes to the fading of hair color, and dulls out the hair’s shine. Also, when you often swim in the ocean, this takes a toll on your hair because the salt dries out the hair even more. Moreover, those who regularly swim in a chlorinated pool may notice that their hair develops a greenish hue.

    When applying sunblock to the skin, remember to apply sunblock to your head too. Wear a cap or use an umbrella for additional protection. There are salt-repellent and chlorine-repellent hair conditioners you can apply before swimming.

  2. Repair dry, damaged hair at home

    In addition to the daily conditioning that the hair needs, deep conditioning is key to repairing hair that has become damaged and dry. For your regular hair washing, choose a shampoo that has extra proteins or is specially made for damaged hair. Apply a leave-in or no-rinse hair conditioner. You can also give your hair a protein treatment or use a heat-activated hair conditioner twice a month. Hair is composed mostly of protein, which is why adding protein to hair is the best hair repair solution. Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap after applying the product and aim the hair dryer to your hair for half an hour. Rinse the conditioner off afterwards.

    For natural remedies, there are several pantry items that can be used to deep condition your hair in the comforts of your own home. Spread mayonnaise, olive oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, or virgin coconut oil on your hair, cover with a shower cap, and leave it on overnight. The oils add moisture to your hair. Rinse it off when you wake up. You can use your regular shampoo to wash it off. Another option is to wash with a solution of three parts water to one part white vinegar.

    Just as mayonnaise conditions the hair very well, raw eggs also have the same effect too. Eggs provide much-needed protein to dry hair. Separate the yolks and whites of two eggs. Add some water and honey to the egg whites and then apply to damp hair. Use the egg yolks instead if you feel that your hair needs more protein. Let the mixture sit for ten minutes, then rinse. Remember to use cold water throughout, or else the eggs will cook.

    When you sleep, lay your head on a satin pillowcase or wrap your hair with a satin scarf. Satin buffs your hair, making it shiny. It also helps preserve the moisture in your hair. On the other hand, cotton absorbs moisture and can irritate the hair strands as you move around in your sleep.

  3. Treat dry, damaged hair from the inside

    A protein-rich diet is the best defense against hair dryness and damage. Incorporate a lot of plant and animal protein in what you eat.

    Add foods to your diet that are rich in essential fatty acids or omega-3. Omega-3 is commonly present in olive oil, salmon, tuna, herring, walnuts, and flax seeds. Taking a multivitamin or vitamins A, B, E, and K every day will repair dry and damaged hair in time. Omega-3 and the above-mentioned vitamins help add moisture to the hair. Furthermore, an easy habit to start is drinking plenty of water.

Sometimes, the habit of washing your hair every day with shampoo is the culprit that causes dry hair. Most shampoos have alcohols and sulphates that dry out the hair when used too often. Continue to shower every day, but use a conditioner instead of shampoo to wash your hair. Shampooing once a week or less, in addition to the above-mentioned tips on how to repair dry damaged hair, will help make your hair healthy and soft again.
