How to Save Money on Plane Tickets

Although traveling by air is more accessible to people these days, it still does not make flying any cheaper. Even when airlines have promotions that lower the basic cost of traveling, a lot of airlines still add various fees in order to hike up the prices of their discounted airfare. However, this does not mean that you always have to shell out a huge amount of money if you want to fly. If you are practical, there are several ways on how to save money on plane tickets. Follow these tips in order to lessen your airfare costs and increase your pocket money:

  1. Be flexible with your travel schedule. You will notice that the prices of airfare vary, depending on the time and date that you choose to fly. For example, if you need to fly in the morning, you can choose from the several time options available to you. It would be better if you are willing to adjust your schedule so that you don’t get stuck with an expensive flight with just one hour difference. Normally, the early morning flights at 4 or 5 in the morning are cheaper than the flights at around 7 or 8 a.

. When it comes to the date of your travel, airfare prices are cheapest on Tuesdays. If you are going on vacation, you might also get better deals on hotels and other activities during weekdays.

  2. Avoid baggage fees. Before, you only had to pay for excess luggage when you travel. However, a lot of airlines these days have charged fees for any luggage at all. Traveling light is the key to getting around this fee, as most airlines will allow you one carry-on bag at no extra cost. However, if this is not possible, you can at least be prepared to handle the extra fees by comparing the differences between what the airlines charge. Choose the airline that has the lowest fees for excess baggage.

  3. Book a flight in advance. The cost of airfare tickets get significantly higher as the travel date approaches, so experts recommend that you book your flight at least six weeks before your travel date, or even earlier. If you book online, you can browse various travel dates starting from the present date up to a year later. The earlier you book your flight, the higher your chances of getting cheap airfare will be.

  4. Research fees for different airlines. If you know that you are going to have special considerations during your travel, you have to be aware of the fees beforehand so that you can save up for them, or even find ways to dodge those fees. You can check out these fees from several third party websites or better yet, check out the airline’s website to get an updated fee matrix. When you book a flight, make sure you’re not paying for things you don’t have to.

  5. Keep informed. There is a lot of competition in the market, and that is a good thing because competition paves the way for airlines to drop their fares and give promos and discounts. Usually, these seat sales will last for a few days only, so time is of the essence. Signing up for different airlines’ mailing lists, following their Twitter accounts, and liking their Facebook pages will keep you abreast of their new deals and promotions.

Knowledge is power when it comes to how to save money on plane tickets. This way, you can manage your finances better and save a lot of money in your travel adventures.
